Afton Daines Hirst
Afton Daines Hirst, 96, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 13, 2024 in Logan, Utah surrounded by her children and family.
Afton was born on November 22, 1927 in Hyde Park, Utah to Delmar Lamb and Lillian Hancey Daines and was 2nd to oldest of four children.
She was raised in Hyde Park, attending elementary school in Hyde Park, junior high in Smithfield, Utah, and graduated in 1945 from North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah. She attended Utah State Agricultural College for a short time where she was involved in Lambda Delta Sigma Chi.
Afton began her employment in 1945 at Sears, Roebuck and Company; and in 1968 began working at Stylish Fabrics Bernina. She retired from Bernina in 1989 after 31 years. The majority of her employment was bookkeeping and accounting, which came natural to her. She developed lifelong friendships where ever she worked.
While employed at Sears, she met C. Keith Hirst and they were married June 28, 1949 in the Logan LDS Temple and last year celebrated their 74th Wedding Anniversary together. She was a United States Army wife for two years beginning in 1952.
Afton enjoyed and was an excellent seamstress; she loved to cook; she mastered crocheting, cross-stitching, knitting, and all handiwork; she enjoyed family history; she was always excited to go camping; but more than anything – she was happiest in her flower gardens and doing yard work. Lunch with retired co-workers and friends was always a treat.
Afton is survived by her daughter Cathryn (Jerry) Peterson; son Gary (Laurie) Hirst; 7 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her older and only brother Ray (Barbara) Daines.
She was preceded in death by her husband Keith (October 29, 2023), and son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Nancy Hirst. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister-in-law Cleo Daines, sister and brother-in-law Georgene (Wesley) Baer, and sister and brother-in-law Marva (Don) Cook.
