Alan Vincent Nielsen

November 12, 1939 — June 22, 2023

Alan Vincent Nielsen passed away on Thursday, June 22, 2023, surrounded by his family at his home at the age of 83.

Alan was born in his grandmother’s home in Hyrum, Utah on November 12, 1939, to Andrew Vincent Nielsen and Mary Allen Nielsen. He was the 2nd of 5 children and grew up on a farm, milking cows and lived in the beautiful, small town of Hyrum his whole life. Alan was very active in his youth and excelled in sports, particularly wrestling and football. He had a great love of the outdoors and spent his time in the mountains whenever he could. In high school, Alan met the love of his life, Julie Ann Jensen. These high school sweethearts were married in 1959 and started their lives together and were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple in 1980. This year they celebrated 64 years together on May 23rd. Alan and Julie had 4 beautiful daughters, Alana, LeAnn, Mandy and Angie. Alan was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Alan was a successful general contractor and built hundreds of custom homes throughout Cache Valley over several decades. He and Julie were members of the Hyrum Saddle Club for 25 years, where he served as president. As the years went by, Alan and Julie spent countless hours in the mountains… riding their horses and side-by-side to their cabin property in Blacksmith Fork Canyon, enjoying all seasons of the year. Alan was an avid big game hunter and was envied for his many trophy elk and deer conquests. He was known for his great hunting stories and earned the nickname “The Great White Hunter” from his wife. Alan and his son-in-law, Mike Wursten, were great hunting companions and spent many hunting seasons in Idaho and Utah. His friends called him “Big Al” which inspired him to name his cabin, “Big Al’s Place”. Father’s Day weekend at the cabin with the family was a treasured tradition for Alan and Julie. They spent the weekend with their children and grandchildren riding horses and four wheelers and sitting around the fire, listening to Alan share his amazing life experiences and hunting stories. No one could tell a story like he could, complete with sound effects, tall tales and occasionally busting out into song to keep everyone listening intently. Alan lived life to the fullest and took advantage of all this earthly life could offer him. He has now been invited to join his Savior, Jesus Christ, in the great heavenly hunting grounds of eternity.

Alan was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Nielsen, and his father, Andrew Nielsen. He is survived by his wife Julie and their 4 daughters, Alana Dupont (Marty), LeAnn Hathaway (Brent), Mandy Wursten (Mike), and Angie Nielsen. He is also survived by his 4 siblings who all live in Hyrum, Marilyn Nye, Lester Nielsen (Judy), Trudy Hancey (Jeff), and Craig Nielsen (Lisa). Alan has 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is dearly loved and will be missed.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023, at the LDS Church at 455 East 100 South in Hyrum.
