Alan Dale Smith

October 15, 1922 — October 8, 2008

CORNISH, UTAH: Alan Dale Smith passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, just one week before his 86th birthday. He was born in Logan, Utah on October 15, 1922 to Ezra Obray and Ella Jones Bailey Smith, the last of six children, and grew up during the Great Depression.
Al graduated from Logan High School with the class of 1940 and then attended Utah State University for 2 years. He then went to California to work with his special friend and brother-in-law, Paul Boggs, and on July 17, 1945 married his sweetheart Joyce Bergeson in Los Angeles, CA. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple when Al and Joyce returned to Cache Valley to raise their family.
Al enjoyed farming the land on his farm at Utida (on the Utah Idaho border) and had many good relationships with many of his surrounding neighbors:
Eldon Hansen, Roland Johnson, Weldon Reeder, Bryan Bergeson, Veri Buxton, and many others. Al also worked as an insurance representative for the Bear River Mutual Insurance Company for 46 years. Al loved working with the public and forged many long lasting friendships with both his clients and with the employees at Bear River Mutual which he cherished.
Al loved living the "small town" life in Cornish and got involved in many of the issues facing the town through the years, serving as a member on the Cornish Town Board at one time. In later years he enjoyed walking for exercise with his good friends Joe Myler, Fried Veibell and Lamar Tarbet. He followed the political issues of the day and had many lively debates with his good friend, Willis "Bill" Hall. He took very seriously the opportunity to vote and encouraged all to do likewise.
Al was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in numerous positions through the years. He felt blessed to serve as a member of the Benson Stake High Council, as a Temple Officiator with Joyce, and as a Stake Missionary. He loved the gospel and had an unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ as his Savior.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Joyce, and four children: Paul (Addie) Smith of Farmington, UT; Beverly (Jerry) Shaw of Burley, ID; Terry (Bryan) Purdie of Richmond, UT; Steven (Elaine) Smith of Layton, UT; 21 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; one sister Roma Boggs of Boise, ID. Preceded in death by his parents, one brother Claine Smith and three sisters, Dorothy Evans, Ella Aller and Sara Andersen, and one granddaughter, Saralee Shaw.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at noon in the Cornish/Trenton Ward Chapel, 1200 North 400 West in Trenton, with Bishop Conrad Naegle presiding. There will be a viewing from 10:30 am to 11:30 am prior to the service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary of Logan.
