Alda Rees Allan 1917 - 2015
LOGAN, UTAH: Alda Rees Allan, 97, died, Sunday, March 1, 2015 in Logan. She was born April 18, 1917 in Logan, Utah to George L. and Veda Munk Rees. She grew up in Smithfield and attended elementary school there.
Born to a country doctor and his fashionable wife, Alda had many privileges. Her father loved artwork, dolls, china, and books. He never went to Salt Lake City that he didn’t return with an armful of books, many of which were donated to the library. Alda’s love of reading was fostered by the abundance of books in the home and her mother’s tolerance for Alda’s attempt to do dishes or dust while reading a book. The china sets her father purchased were souvenirs of his travels, but the full set of china for her dolls was her favorite. Her love of bridge also came from her father. Alda was the substitute whenever her father was called away on a house call.
From her mother, Alda gained a love of flowers and the culinary arts. Her early attempts at cooking were routinely dumped in the canal behind the family home in Smithfield. She hated lumps in anything, so for years her father would give her a strainer every Christmas. As her cooking skills improved, her home was a destination for many social events. Alda was active in a range of clubs from literary and square dance to DUP and the dental auxiliary. Alda loved her home and homemaking. Breakfasts were on a schedule. Monday was eggs, Tuesday was waffles, Wednesday was pancakes. Her house and yard were immaculate.
Alda was a bright child, skipping a grade in middle school. She excelled in math and PE. Sports have always been important to Alda. She taught PE at North Cache High, coaching teams in basketball and baseball. Her favorite church calling was dance director. She served in the primary for 27 years as secretary and Cub Scout leader
At 17, she met her husband, Glen, on the tennis court (at a dance in Wellsville). After a five-year courtship, they married and left for dental school. Their time at USC was challenging. Glen worked for a mortician, picking up bodies during the night. Alda’s employment was varied. Her love of chocolate made her a poor fit for the candy store job. She got so sick from sampling the wares that she had to quit. She worked as a tutor, as a photographer’s helper, and as a clerk. Homesickness was a frequent companion. The loss of their first child after just three days was devastating.
Alda loved life and all it had to offer. When asked, “Have you ever experienced anything that is almost like a miracle?”, Alda responded immediately, “Every time a baby is born.” She loved her children and grandchildren. Her advice was “Stop to smell the roses and stay close to the church.”
Alda had six children, Glen (died soon after birth), Lynda (John) Campbell, Norm (Debbie) Allan, Stephen (Vicki) Allan, JaNae (Larry) Hay, Bob (Kathy) Allan. She has 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.
