Alice Denney
Alice Denney, 95, died Friday August 12, 2011 at the Ashley Manor-Hawthorne Nursing Home in Chubbuck, Idaho.
Alice was born 25 March 1916, Byron, Big Horn, Wyoming, the ninth child of Edward and Julia Ann England Denney. The family moved to Virginia, Bannock, Idaho in 1921, where farming crops, chickens, sheep, cows and honey bees barely sustained them. Alice enjoyed working outside alongside her father, nurturing early, her love for trees, plants and animals. After graduating from Downey High School, where she was active in a violin quartet, she attended LDS Hospital Nursing School in Salt Lake City, graduating as a registered nurse, June 1939.
Alice never married. She made nursing a career, which included one year in Cordova, Alaska, three years in the Army Nurse Corps, starting as 2nd Lt. advancing to Captain at the time of discharge in 1947. She was stationed in Linz, Austria, part of that time. She then earned a BA degree in psychology, 1951, at University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, MA degree in botany, 1955, at U of U, Salt Lake City, Utah. She worked double-shifts on weekends, as a surgical nurse, at the Budge Hospital in Logan to sustain herself, also earning a PhD in horticulture in 1963, at Utah State University, Logan, Utah, where she was then employed as a research assistant in agricultural education and animal husbandry, until retirement. She became accomplished in ceramics, had her own wheel and did research on various glazes. She and her sister, Julia, submitted many prize winning floral arrangements to the Downey fair.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Julia, all of her siblings: Vervean Denney Pryde (Alexander), Edward Leroy (Myrtle Skidmore & Iva Hannock), John Claude (Phoebe Christensen), Joseph Boyd (Vivian Reynolds), Charles Oliver (Ruth Henwood), LaVon, a sister (1907-1915), Eliza (Keith Olson), Julia (Merlin Blanchard), Doris, a sister (1920-1943).
Graveside services will be 12 noon, Wednesday,17 Aug. 2011, at the Downey, Bannock, Idaho Cemetery. Condolences may be extended to the family online by visiting
