Allen DeWitt Palmer, age 98, passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014 in Logan, Utah.
He was born on November 29, 1915 in Logan, Utah to Alfred Allen and Minnie Gladys DeWitt Palmer. He was the eldest of three children.
He married LaVoyle Reese in 1941 (deceased) and they later divorced. He then married Mary Louise Hughey in 1962 (deceased).
He is survived by two children, Kathy (Ron) South and Allen Lynn (Bonnie) Palmer. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Lori Dawn Rigby, Dee Ryan Rigby, Darin Dee Rigby, Teri Lynn Palmer, and Brandon Lynn Palmer, and one great–grandchild, Mason Dee Rigby.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Thais Hansen and brother, Rob Roy Palmer.
DeWitt is an accomplished braider using rawhide, horse hair, and other materials to design everything from reins, bracelets, hair clips, saddles, and chaps.
DeWitt has spent 10 years teaching braiding classes through the adult education program. He was awarded the Governor’s Fine Arts Award in 1987.
DeWitt spent 12 yrs. with the Festival of the American West displaying his art of braiding.
He was part owner and operator of A.H. Palmer and Sons. He also worked as the head of maintenance for Utah State University.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in the Millville Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North in Logan. Condolences may be sent to the family at
