Allen George Wheeler

October 20, 1933 — November 21, 2016

Allen George Wheeler passed away in his home on November 21, 2016 of Acute Leukemia. Allen was born October 20, 1933 at the family home in Lewiston Utah to Lloyd Joseph & Delva Allen Wheeler. A long-awaited baby boy he was welcomed by two sisters. His mother always said, “He wasn’t spoiled, he was just loved.”
As a young boy, Allen knew the value of hard work and saving his money. He kept his money in a coffee can up on the shelf. He was just eight years old when he bought his first piece of land. When he was a Junior in high school he worked for the Amalgamated Sugar Company in order to purchase an 30 additional acres.
Allen attended school at Lewiston Elementary and graduated from North Cache High School.
After a yearlong courtship, he had to sell a good cow in order to buy a diamond ring and on September 17th 1955 he married the love of his life Dolores Gossner at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Logan Utah.
Allen and Dolores bought a small home and acreage in Lewiston where they built a life on a farm and raised crops, cattle and two daughters Trish and Dixie. Through example he taught the girls how to work hard, how to stand down a wild cow and to do it all using hand signals.
From his pinto pony Spot to 2 AQHA World Champion Chariot horses Allen loved good horses, and the friendships he made on the racetrack. He was president of the Lewiston Riding club for years and enjoyed trail rides, New Years parties and helping with the Independence Day celebration.
The Lewiston 4th of July celebration was near to Allen’s heart. Over the years there wasn’t much of the celebration he hadn’t been involved in one way or another. He had supplied cows for the rodeo, rode and owned race horses, and watched his girls, grandkids and great-grandkids compete in the rodeo and horse races. Allen & Dolores were honored as parade Grand Marshalls in 2016.
Farming was in his blood, he said he never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did. In his later years, he found time to stop at several “offices” where he made many friends and solved the world’s problems before making it to Gossners for lunch every day with Dolores.
No matter where he went Allen found someone to talk to; He loved to listen to people and tell them his stories. Allen & Dolores traveled through many states and countries on business, but for Allen there was nowhere that compared to Cache Valley and driving around the farm.
Allen is survived by his wife of 61 years Dolores, and his daughters Trish (Wayne) Gibbs, Dixie (Alan) Udy. Grandkids Kristan (Casey) Earl, Travis (Sarah) Gibbs, Cody Udy (Natalie), Dusty (Tawny) Udy, Tyler Udy, Nicole (AJ) Sanchez and 12 great-grandchildren. Grandpa always made the best tractor sounds and loved to have his grandkids and great-grandkids work cows with him.
He was proceeded in death by his parents; in-laws Edwin and Josephine Gossner; sisters: Wanda (Bardo) Bodily, and Ressa (Fred) Yantes, and a grandson, Ryan Udy.
A viewing will be held Friday evening, November 25th between 5 PM and 8 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary on Center St. in Logan and between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM on Saturday, November 26th at the Lewiston 2nd Ward LDS Church (10 South 1600 West). The funeral will be held at 12 noon at the Lewiston 2nd Ward LDS Church. He will be buried next to his in-laws in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
