Alma Anderson Hatch

SMITHFIELD, UTAH: Alma “Al” Anderson Hatch, 92, of Smithfield, Utah, passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at Terrace Grove Assisted Living
He was born September 18, 1921, at Oxford, Idaho, the son of Walter Atkinson Hatch and Harriet Anderson Hatch. He was the third child of five children. His siblings are Lynn, Aloha, Jerald and LaRaynne.
He attended Oxford Elementary School and Downey High School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army July 1942, and served 3 ½ years. He met Betty Jean Walker while serving in the U. S. Army. They married on April 6, 1946, in Mt. Vernon Illinois. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple.
He grew up working on the family farm and also for his grandfathers, along side of his many Uncles and cousins. He has had various occupations; for the Union Pacific Railroad. He was a Dairy Herdsman, Hoof trimmer, Yardmaster at the Smithfield Livestock Auction. A State Brand Inspector and shod many horses throughout his life. He retired from Sky View High School as night watchman.
He has always had a great love of horses and happily broke and trained many. He enjoyed driving horses pulling a wagon full of family and children. He, proudly, used the horse and buggy harnesses that belonged to his father and passed to him, and now passed on to his grandson’s. He was a member of the Skyline Cutter Racing Association for thirty years competing in cutter races every winter and winning the world Championship title with his partner in 1981, in Elko, Nevada. He and Betty traveled with the Cache Valley Good Sam Club, They loved the Canyons and spent a lot of time fishing and camping. They traveled for several years then settled to spending the winter months in Washington, Utah, and summers in Smithfield, Utah. He also served in many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Betty. Their children, Susan (Emerson, deceased) Child, Larry and Valerie Hatch, Karen and Jack Hampton. Six grandchildren. Eight great grandchildren, with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Lynn Walter Hatch (WWII) and Jerald (Jake) Hatch. Sisters, Aloha Hall and LaRaynne Henderson.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, July 14, at the L.D.S 8th Ward building.155 West 400 North, in Smithfield, Utah. There will be a viewing from 10:00 A.M. - 11:30 A.M. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
