Anna Beth Reeder Bishop
1915-2009
LOGAN — Anna Beth Reeder Bishop, our loving mother, grandmother and grandma-great, passed away peacefully at her home while surrounded by family, including her loyal dog, Buffy, on Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 — 10 days shy of her 94th birthday.
Anna Beth was born Dec. 13, 1915, at the Pearce Hospital in Brigham City, Utah. She was the seventh and final child of Daniel and Charlotte Reeder. Anna Beth grew up in Brigham City and enjoyed the many things life had to offer, including the swing in the family’s apple tree, playing jacks, playing dolls and holding funerals for dead gold fish and baby chickens.
During her high school days at Box Elder, Anna Beth relished being in the glee and booster clubs, as well as performing in assembly skits. She graduated seventh in her class and was recognized as the top home economics student. During her teen years, Anna Beth spent part of her summers picking raspberries, strawberries, beans, peaches and cherries.
Anna Beth attended both Weber Junior College in Ogden and Utah State Agricultural College in Logan — as they were known back then. She was on the swimming team while at Weber. Anna Beth began her schooling at Utah State in the fall of 1936. Soon after, she met the love of her life, Avery Alvin Bishop, who passed away on May 31, 1990.
At Utah State, Anna Beth was a member of the Phi Upsilon Omicron Scholastic Fraternity, where she participated in all their activities, including the making and selling of fruit cakes, as well as making lunches for those who worked on “A” Day projects. She majored in textiles and clothing and minored in food and nutrition. Both fields of emphasis played a big part in Anna Beth’s career as a homemaker.
On Nov. 10, 1938, Anna Beth married Alvin in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Together, they became the proud parents of four children, two boys and two girls. Anna Beth and Alvin mostly lived in Logan, but also spent some time in Pine Bluff, Ark., and Fort Collins, Colo. Alvin’s profession allowed them to visit many different countries. They loved traveling the world together.
Besides her home and family responsibilities, Anna Beth was heavily involved in the community, as well as being an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her church responsibilities included being a teacher, serving in the primary presidency for 20 years and serving in the relief society.
Anna Beth was a member and officer of Kiwanians, Beaux Arts Literary Club, Logan Golf & Country Club, and the Professional Homemakers of Cache County. For many years, she served as a Voter Registration Agent and as Voting Judge of Elections. Anna Beth was a charter member of the Volunteer Auxiliary of the Logan Hospital (pink ladies) and was also very active in the USU Faculty Women’s League.
Sewing was a major love for Anna Beth. Learning to sew as a child, she made all her own clothes since the age of 12. Over the years, Anna Beth touched the lives of many others with this talent, along with knitting, crocheting and needlepoint.
Noted for her green thumb, Anna Beth loved to work in her flower/vegetable garden. She also loved to paint and her hand-dipped chocolates — and famous green dessert — brought pleasure to her family and friends for many years.
Anna Beth is survived by and will be sorely missed by her children: A. Bruce (Sally) of Mendon; Janet (Ron) Wilcox of Midvale; Carol Anne Denniston of Logan; and D. Roger (Lezlee) Bishop of Salt Lake City. She is also survived by eight grandchildren — Ryan Bishop, Rebeca Bishop, Wade Denniston, Alisa Ann Bishop, David Bishop, Daniel Bishop, Laura Beth Bishop and Amanda Bishop — and three great-grandchildren — Brianna Bishop, Tyler Olivia Bishop and Carson Denniston.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thanks to all those at Cache Valley Specialty Hospital’s wound care center who took exceptional care of Anna Beth: Dr. Deanne Long, Abe Ferrah, Lisa Bodily, Michelle Ruru, Gayleen Denney, Christie Petersen, Shauna Elleman and Karen Dawes. The family also wishes to thank her physician, Dr. Deserae Goble, whose care was much appreciated.
A viewing will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 6-8 p.m. at Allen Mortuary, 420 E. 1800 North in North Logan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 9, at noon at Allen Mortuary. A viewing will precede the funeral from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Logan Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alvin and Anna Beth Bishop Scholarship Fund set up at Utah State University.
