Anna Malmberg Mathews, 96, of Providence passed away peacefully in Logan on June 1, 2008 after a long life of service to family, church and community.
Ann was born March 13, 1912 in Clarkston, Utah to Annie Griffin and John E. Malmberg, the 8th of 11 children.
She graduated form the Wm. Budge Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in January of 1934. She did private duty nursing at the hospital and in homes until June 1934 when she accepted a position as public health nurse in Cache County.
She married Grant L. Mathews of Providence in the Salt Lake LDS Temple in November 1935. President Heber J. Grant, a great-uncle of the groom, performed the ceremony.
Grant and Ann were parents of six children, Grant (Peggy) Logan; Dennis (Katie) Millville; Jennie, (Bill) Fishbaugh, Phoenix, Ariz.; Dean (Leslie) Grace, Idaho; Lynn (Tama), Hyrum; Hilda (Blaine) McBride, Bountiful.
Ann worked part-time doing private and general duty while she was raising her family. During World Ward II she returned to public health nursing and in 1952 she began working full time at the Logan Hospital where she was employed for the next 21 years.
At the time of her retirement in August of 1974, she was clinical director of the maternal and child division. She served as vice president, president and board member of District six of the USNA. She received the "Nurse of the Year" award in that district in 1973.
She was always active in community and church service. She served in leadership of the Cache County Farm Bureau Women, Logan Business and Professional Women's Club, Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the PT A. She also did volunteer work for the American Red Cross. Her church service includes Primary, MIA, Relief Society President and Temple Officiator.
Ann has 34 grandchildren, 89 great grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren
In the loss of loved ones, she has born sorrow with dignity and faith. She was an example of optimism and happiness, always seeing the good in others.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings; Florence, John, Joseph, Mary, Clarence DeVerl, Wesley, Hilda, Jennie, Verl and Ethel; her husband, Grant, a daughter, Jennie, a son, Dean, and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the Providence 12th Ward Chapel, 309 South Main Street, Providence at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008. There will be a viewing at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the Church on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Providence Cemetery.
