Clara Annette McBride Godfrey, born on May 8, 1941, in Blackfoot, Idaho, to Shirley and May McBride, moved to Hyrum, Utah at the age of one, where she spent her childhood and teenage years. She graduated from South Cache High School as one of the top students in her class, earning the honor of offering the prayer at her high school graduation and speaking at her seminary graduation.
While attending Utah State University, on a full scholarship, Annette met her sweetheart, Mark Lewis Godfrey. Their love story began when Mark noticed her in the middle of a study session surrounded by guys. He walked her to class that day, marking the start of a life filled with devotion, love, and partnership. Together, Annette and Mark worked tirelessly on the family farm while raising eight children, who quickly learned to recognize and respect her distinctive look—a glance that could swiftly put them in their place. To support Mark through college, Annette attended his classes and took detailed notes, enabling him to focus on the farm, all while starting and nurturing their growing family.
Annette’s dedication to her family was boundless. She enjoyed and worked hard to maintain a large, beautiful garden and canned endless amounts of food. She sewed everything from prom dresses to dance costumes and dress shirts. She continued her acts of love by crafting blessing outfits, baptism clothing, wedding dresses, quilts, and countless other treasures for her children and grandchildren. She was also talented at toll painting, wreath-making, creating porcelain dolls, and painting ceramics. Annette happily shared those skills with others, teaching anyone eager to learn.
Thirty-one years ago, Annette faced an unexpected and life-altering challenge when Mark passed away. Left to lead her family, she did so with unwavering faith, hard work, and determination. She became the cornerstone of her family, continuing to teach, love, and inspire those around her.
Annette’s adventurous spirit led her to travel extensively, exploring and learning about the places she visited. Her journeys took her to Hong Kong, Cambodia, New Zealand, England, Hawaii, Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, and destinations throughout the United States. She shared these adventures with anyone who would join her and often traveled with her children and grandchildren, creating cherished memories on family vacations.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Annette could be found at their dance events, sporting events, graduations, weddings, and any other important life events. She hosted magical Easter egg hunts, arranged visits from Santa Claus, and held unforgettable sleepovers where she may have even taught some of her older grandchildren how to toilet paper a house. Christmas was especially dear to her; she spent months planning, making, and buying thoughtful gifts for each child and grandchild.
Annette’s life was a testament to her faith and dedication to service. She fulfilled many church callings, including Relief Society president, Young Women’s president, Scout leader, Sunday school teacher, and a steadfast minister. Later in life, she cherished her service in the temple, often scheduling all other things so as to not conflict with the days she was to serve in the Sacred House of the Lord. Her faith in Christ shone through in her every act of love, kindness, and service.
Annette Godfrey passed peacefully with her family by her side on November 20, 2024.
