Annette Hovey Hull was born on September 25, 1939 to Beth and Garr Hovey in the town of Logan, Utah. She passed away in her sleep 85 years later on the 8th of August.
Growing up, Annette spent summers on her father’s ranch in Burley, Idaho. When school started, Annette would return to Logan to live for several weeks with her beloved grandmother, Jessie Reese.
Annette was greatly admired by others throughout her life and was a strong leader and organizer, as is evidenced by her being voted into several student leadership positions in high school and later at Utah State University.
It was at Utah State, where Annette was earning a degree in medical technology that she met Donald Hull. Annette was voted the Dream Girl by the Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity, which was coincidentally Don’s fraternity. At the age of 21 Annette married Don on December 23, 1960 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints.
After graduating from Utah State, Annette joined Don in St. Louis, where he was studying to be a dentist and she earned her teaching credentials. For five years Annette taught math and science to junior high students in St. Louis, while also teaching young people in her church. Annette also advised Don to specialize and become an orthodontist, which he did and ultimately had a long and successful career. While Annette and Don were in St. Louis and Don was in dental school, Annette gave birth to their first child, Heather.
Annette and Don moved from St. Louis to Fort Benning, Georgia because Don was in the military. In Georgia Annette continued to display her leadership, compassion, and service by teaching church youth and raising a substantial amount of money for a church building project. During their two years in Fort Benning, Annette had their second child, Brian.
Annette visited her sister in Palo Alto, fell in love with the area, and she and Don moved here in 1969. A few years later they had their last two children Brandon (in 1973) and Ashley (in 1974). In California, Annette continued to lead by serving on the board of Ford Country Day School is Los Altos, and later Castilleja private school in Palo Alto. She also served on town committees to raise money for schools and for events like the bicentennial. Annette also continued to be active in her church, teaching children ranging from the very young to teens and young adults. She also spent 12 years teaching Blazer B’s, a church club that prepares boys for Boy Scouts, and every boy who came out of her class was either a Tenderfoot or Second Class rank when the entered scouting. When the workers left a half-finished project, Annette took up the reins and became the general contractor for the construction of their home in Los Altos Hills, which has been the Hull family home for the last 50 years. Annette did this all while managing a household with four active children and working a full-time job selling real estate.
Much more could be said about Annette’s accomplishments, kindness, and positive impact on those around her. Almost everybody who spent time with her has a warm memory and a story about how she made life a little happier or better. Most importantly, Annette Hull was a wonderful wife to Don, a strong and supportive mother to Heather, Brian, Brandon, and Ashley, and loving grandmother to 21 grandchildren, and cherished great-grandmother to 13 great grandchildren. She passed away in her sleep on August 8th at 6:30pm, and she is already as missed as she is admired.
