Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Bernice Annette Bates Larsen, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2024, at the age of 80 at Legacy House in Logan, Utah. Born on May 20, 1944, in Schenectady, New York, she was the cherished daughter of Bernice and Keith Bates. At the age of three, Annette and her family relocated to Salt Lake City, where she lived a life filled with love, laughter, and musical passion.
Annette lived the life of a princess growing up; she took piano lessons, studied ballet, and excelled academically as a proud graduate of East High School, where she had the honor of speaking at her graduation. She loved her family and siblings, Cynthia, Karen, and Jimmy. She shared a profound bond with both her mother and father but was a daddy’s girl at heart. She always knew everything would be taken care of if her dad was around. She cherished the time spent and extended visits with her grandparents, aunts and uncles growing up
In 1963, Annette was crowned Miss Utah, a title that showcased not only her beauty but also her exceptional musical talent. She was a Day’s of ’47 princess and modeled for the GLMA Mink Company, traveling to cities like New York, Chicago, and Milwaukee.
On June 17, 1965, she married her sweetheart, Stewart Beck Larsen, in the Salt Lake Temple, beginning a journey that would last nearly six decades on earth and now eternity. Stewart was six years older than her, so though she worshiped him from afar growing up in the same ward in Salt Lake City, she never thought she had a chance with him. But the timing was perfect, after Stewart's stint in the army and his church mission they eventually began dating. She loved being serenaded by Stewart's return missionary fraternity brothers and being pinned by him at the University of Utah.
Annette gave everything she had to her family. Together with Stewart, she raised seven children, Keith (Angi), Camille, Crystal (Tony), Mark (Melissa), Scott (Tangi), Craig (Vicki), and Carolyn (Jason). She is known as Granan to 32 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Keeping her children safe and making smart decisions was one of the most important things in Annette's life. It didn't matter if that meant going around town at midnight with her hair in curlers in search of her kids, and absolutely finding them, to sternly help them home and keep their curfew or giving a well deserved lecture even when they were adults and living on their own. As a result her children never, ever, wanted to disappoint or embarrass their mother with poor decisions and bad choices.
She was a passionate piano teacher, sharing her love of music with students from 1965 until a few years ago, even teaching her out-of-state grandchildren through Zoom. Her grand piano, a centerpiece of their home, symbolized her lifelong devotion to music.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Annette served as the organist and pianist in every ward she was a member of since her junior high years.
Music was at the heart of Annette’s life. From her early piano lessons in second grade to teaching hundreds of kids over the years she never tired of the piano and classical music. Despite being the farthest thing from a morning person she would be awake and teaching piano lessons at 6 am to help support the family budget and her children's activities and desires. Teaching piano continued long enough to even help her children with college tuition before going full-time pro-bono for her grandkids. She would beam to see her students perform at recitals and especially her grandchildren.
Education was very important to Annette. She put her’s on hold for her family. After relocating to Logan, she went back to school at Utah State earning her bachelor's degree in 1984 with seven children, the youngest being one year old at the time. She pursued and earned her master's degree from Utah State in 1995 and wrote her thesis on Eighty Years of Faculty Women’s League.
She gave it all to her family. Thank you Mom! We love you.
Annette was preceded in death by her husband, Stewart and one grandchild. She is survived by their seven children; 32 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her 3 siblings.
We would like to thank all the Angels at Legacy House memory care who loved and cared for her. They went above and beyond. We are forever grateful!
