Annie Johnson Layton

Annie Benson Johnson Layton, 95, passed away on November 2, 2006 of natural causes in the Portland, Oregon area.
Born in Logan, Utah on February 6, 1911 to Orrin Raymond Benson and Ida Marie Hansen, she was raised by her mother and stepfather Sydney Albert Johnson. Her maternal grandparents were Lorenzo Hansen and Anna Marie Mitton of Logan. Annie married Howard Secrist Layton June 6, 1932 in the LDS Logan Temple.
She lived in Logan during her youth and early married life. The family also lived in St. Anthony, Idaho and Ogden before moving to Salt Lake City where they lived for fifty-four years. Annie and Howard spent seven winters in Mesa, Arizona and then moved in 1994 to Oregon to be near family. Howard passed away in late 1997.
Annie graduated from Utah State University in Business Education and taught high school and adult education classes. She was also a teacher for the Army during World War II.
Annie was active with the Red Cross and Utah Republican Party. She was involved in many school and church groups with her daughters as they grew up. She was always enthusiastic and willing to do all she could to help her family, church, and community.
She held many callings as a member of the LDS church, including an eighteen month mission to the Los Angeles Temple visitor’s center with Howard. Following her mission, she served as Relief Society President in her local ward. She also spent several years as a tour guide at the LDS Church Office Building and Church History Center.
The couple have three living daughters; Mrs. George M. Carnie (Beverly), who’s first husband, L. Gail Despain, preceeded her in death; Mrs. Gareth B. Danielson (Shirley); and Mrs. Paul R. Rowbotham (Karen).
Annie is survived by her sister Mrs. Moyle Rice (Ruth) of Logan, her three daughters, eight grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday November 10, 2006 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary chapel, 34 E. Center Street, Logan Utah, where friends may call from11:00 am to 12:30 pm prior to services. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
