Arthur Cahoon

Winston Arthur Cahoon was born on November 3, 1928 in Fillmore, Utah to Newel and Hortense Terry Cahoon. He passed away peacefully in the South Bedroom of his own home, on April 13, 2015, just two days shy of combining two oft-quoted certainties in life: Death and Taxes.

Arthur moved to Logan during the early years of the Great Depression, when his parents purchased City Grocery.

Arthur graduated from Logan High in ’47. It was during his senior year that he fell in love with a sophomore and fellow band member named LucyBeth Cowley. Upon high school graduation Arthur enrolled at USU in the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corp, majoring in Business Administration all the while courting his future bride, LucyBeth.

Between 1949 and 1952 Arthur served a 3-year mission to Norway

Arthur and LucyBeth were married on November 21, 1952. Arthur resumed his education at USU, graduating from the AFROTC in 1952. He enlisted immediately in the Air Force and after Basic Training at Lackland AFB, was deployed to Chamont, France.

Arthur and LucyBeth returned stateside in April of 1956 and 2nd Lt. Cahoon transferred to the Reserves where he served for the next 27 years, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1983.

Arthur completed an MBA at USU while serving as Administrative Assistant to the President for Extension, Utah State University.

Dad had an deep love for all things USU, born out of alma mater loyalty and professional reinforcement; the latter being his employment in the Extension Services for 38 years where he juggled many plates and adapted his style and work-load to a series of unique and influential Extension Services Presidents. We believe this made for a rich and rewarding work-life for Dad, one he rarely talked about until he got to his story-telling stage.

Throughout those 38 years of Extension Service, Dad walked to-and-from the USU campus 4 days-a-week, rain, snow, or shine, only taking the car every Thursday to facilitate meeting with the Rotarians for lunch, a ritual he rarely missed.

Parkinson’s disease is only a footnote to Dad’s life. He resisted it with all his declining might, and without complaint. He embraced every adaptive device we could bring him.
We are grateful to Cache Valley Assisted Living and the Staff in the Memory Unit for their kindness and care; to Access Home Health and Hospice and our Nurse Adriane; and to Senior Care for being with us these past weeks.

Arthur is preceded in death by his wife, LucyBeth. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Christensen (Dale); by his children: Jann Peterson (Miles), Dwight, Spencer (Sheri), Catherine Griswold (Jim) and all of his many grand children, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Dad continually served his wife and family. And we have been blessed, in recent months, to serve him and now to remember. We love you, Dad.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 18th at the Cliffside Ward, 1385 East 25 North in Logan. A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday evening at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center St. in Logan. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
