Asael Melvin Buttars, 92, died September 2, 2010, of causes related to age.
He was born December 29, 1917, in Clarkston, Utah, the eldest son of Melvin Henry and Agnes Jardine Buttars. At the age of 1, his family moved to Cornish where he lived the majority of his life.
He attended Cornish Elementary School and North Cache High School, where he participated in track. He attended one year at the Utah State Agricultural College. He served an LDS mission to California, which at that time covered California, Nevada and part of Arizona. Shortly after returning from his mission, he met Agnes Maurine Buxton. They married April 19, 1944, in the Logan LDS Temple. Maurine passed away on December 9, 1987.
His family, church and making things grow were the center of his life. He grew hay, grain and prize-winning sugar beets. He also raised dairy cows and turkeys. For 27 years, he drove a school bus for the Cache County School District. He made many lifelong friends with students, teachers, administrators and especially his fellow bus drivers. He was honored in 1981 as the Outstanding Classified Employee of the Year.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as young men’s president, in two bishoprics, as stake Sunday school superintendent and bishop of the Cornish Ward. He was also a member of the high council in the Benson Stake.
He had the opportunity to serve his community on the Cornish town council and was later elected mayor.
In 1991, he moved to North Logan, where he used his precision farming skills on a large green lawn and tidy vegetable garden. He loved serving as a worker in the Logan Temple for 14 years.
Asael is survived by his daughters, Ann Buttars, Janet Garn, Barbara (Dan) Weston and Lori Buttars, nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include his sister Ruby (Ralph) Chadwick, and brother Chester (Leatrice) Buttars. He was preceded in death by his wife Maurine, daughter Marilyn (Forrest) Fonnesbeck, his sister Hedvig Reeder and brother Boyd Buttars.
