Avis A. Kowallis Peterson completed her earthly journey on February 22, 2016 at Williamsburg Retirement Community. She was born in Logan, Utah in the family home on January 11, 1924. She was the eighth and youngest child of Wilhelm Friedrich and Bertha Ion Abrams Kowallis. She has many fond memories of her childhood growing up in a large family with loving and supportive parents. She and her siblings remained close throughout their lives.
Avis attended Ellis Elementary, Logan Jr. High and Logan Senior High schools. After high school, she worked as a waitress at The Bluebird Restaurant. When she was eighteen years old, she joined the Waves and went to New York for training. While playing basketball, she broke her foot and was hospitalized until it healed. When she returned to her unit, they had all moved on. The Navy gave her the choice to either train with a new unit or be discharged out of the Wave’s. She decided to take the discharge and go home.
After arriving back in Utah, she worked for the Arsenal in Ogden and then Remington Arms in Salt Lake. She later worked for a restaurant long enough to earn the money to return home to Logan.
Upon her return to Logan, she met her sweetheart and eternal companion Stuart Peterson. They were married December 20, 1945 and sealed in the Logan LDS Temple February 5, 1964. They had one daughter, Linda. Stuart passed away January 11, 2002.
At the age of 4, Avis surprised her family by playing the piano by ear. Later she learned to play the organ and has treated her family and friends with beautiful music throughout the years. Later in life, she decided to take up oil painting. She shared her talent with family and friends and also sold some of her paintings. She was a beautiful seamstress and after Stuart taught her how, she was a great cook. She also loved to golf after she retired.
About 1959, Avis started work at the old Logan Regional Hospital. She held several positions including clerk on the maternity floor. She has served in several callings for the LDS Church, including Primary Secretary, MIA Secretary and Visiting Teacher which she loved and served faithfully.
Avis loved to travel and would have liked to travel more. She was able to visit Linda in Hawaii when Bruce was stationed there with the Navy and in August of 2005 she took Linda on a wonderful cruise to Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stuart, her siblings and their spouses; Bill Kowallis, Marie K. Reeves, Charles Kowallis, Wilford Kowallis, Paul Kowallis, Ilah Rogers, and Bertha Error and her son-in-law David Bruce Tams. She is survived by her daughter Linda Tams, her grandchildren; Teresa Hallberg, Lisa (Bruce) Childs and Robert “Bubba” Tams. She is also survived by eight-great grandchildren and three great-grandsons.
Many thanks to Kathy Hall, her hospice nurse and the many CNA’s at Williamsburg who so tenderly watched over her this past year. And thanks to Williamsburg for being such a loving place for her to call home.
