Barbara Hall Allred 1929-2013
Logan, Utah – Barbara Hall Allred, 84, passed away on June 25, 2013. Barbara, the daughter of Horace and Leona Pickett Hall, was born on April 20, 1929, in Burley, Idaho. She grew up in a loving home with two older brothers. Reading books, riding horses, playing piano and spying on her brother, Forrest, were her young priorities. After graduation from Burley High School she earned a degree at BYU, majoring in English. Barbara also obtained a teaching certificate from the U of U. She ended a brief stint teaching high school when she married her principal, Elwood Malcom Allred, on August 5, 1954. They raised three sons as she followed his career to Cocolalla and Boise, Idaho, then Greeley, Colorado, and finally in 1961 to Logan, Utah, where they lived for 52 years.
Barbara made a warm and comfortable home where friends were welcome. Her sons remember her weekly library visits, a competitive game player, fresh bread, trips to the grandparents, summer canning, hiking and camping, music, family home evening, picnics, frequent grammar and etiquette correction, and their parent’s mutual affection. Mom took care of cousins and friends who lived with us during their schooling and who appreciated clean sheets and excellent meals. Barbara and Malcom were blessed with wonderful friends and neighbors whom they treasured. Study group, Literati, drives to “see the leaves” and trips to the Oregon Coast or Saint George were prized times together.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she had a strong testimony and love of the gospel of Jesus Christ and was “an example of the believers.” She served diligently in many callings but was most comfortable at the organ or piano where her talent was much appreciated for many years. Together, Barbara and Malcom also enjoyed serving in the Logan Temple and on a mission in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Malcom Allred and their son, Kent Everett Allred and a great grandson, Joseph Gordon Allred. She is survived by three sons: Bruce & Marjorie Allred of Fruit Heights, Douglas & Linda Allred of North Logan, and Gordon & Irene Allred of Providence; twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren; as well as two older brothers: Rex & Betty (deceased) Hall of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Forrest and Kathryn Hall of Burley, Idaho.
