Barbara Joan Nilson Olson passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 28th, 2013.
Joan was born February 10th, 1934 in Smithfield, UT, to Joseph Peter and Julia Ann Morse Nilson. She cherished her closeness with her sister, brother and close cousins. She grew up in Smithfield except for a few years in Ogden.
She graduated from North Cache High and worked before marrying Arland E. Olson on November 29th, 1952.
She devoted her life to the care of others. She helped her mother care for her great grandmother before becoming an excellent cook and homemaker for her own family. She provided care until the deaths of her in-laws, husband, parents and daughter. Most of her grandchildren never saw the inside of a day-care, but spent their time at Gram’s instead. Many times over the years she opened her home to family, friends and even strangers who needed a place to stay and a warm meal. It was very hard when she came to need help from others, but she was especially grateful for her granddaughter Jamie’s loving care. Jamie’s son Sawyer will especially miss his “bestest buddy”. Her family will also perhaps most miss her incredible sense of humor.
Joan will be most sorely missed by her children Jan and Jerry Meier, Vicki and Chet Smith, and David and Merilee Olson and her grandchildren Jamie and Troy McClain, Megan and Sean Jones, Scott Meier, Zacc Maughan, Dana Olson and Joseph Smith and great-grandson Sawyer McClain. Step-grandsons Aydien McClain, Anthony and Lindsay Meier and their two children and very recently added Amilyn and Jared Dye, Camille and Jimmy Bauer, Aleisha and Chad Viterna, Nathan Boehme, Daniel Boehme, and Nicole and Skyler Phelps and their 11 children will miss her deeply as well. She is preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, husband, beloved daughter Barbara, and cherished grandson, Kelly Meier.
Joan requested private family services and they were held Wednesday, July 31st at the Smithfield City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Allen-Hall Mortuary and Every Bloomin’ Thing and the staff of Logan Regional Hospital for their great care of our mother. Condolences may be sent to the family at
