SMITHFIELD, UTAH: Barbara Rae Humphries Hester, 70, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2014 after a short but valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by loved ones in her daughter’s home in Smithfield, Utah.
Barbara was born to Charlotte Blake and Ray Humphries on July 14, 1943 in Murray, Utah. She was blessed with many adventures and opportunities with her eight sisters and partners in crime. Barbara served an LDS mission and then began her college career at BYU then went to Utah State University where she later met her husband, John Hester. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on December 5, 1969 and were later blessed with six wonderful children. She was known by many as an amazing example of kindness, love and positivity. She was a mother to many more than just her children. She was always willing to offer a kind word to anyone who came to her window at the seminaries in the valley where she worked as a secretary for many years. Barbara has always had passion for music and an unwavering testimony of our Heavenly Father and his eternal plan. Her favorite quote was, “God is in his Heaven”. She has served in many capacities for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she always gave 110 percent. Barbara is survived by her husband, John Hester and their children, Maylynn and Lee Crosby; Michele and Mike Sundstrom; Shaun and Lea Hester; Tyrell and Amanda Hester; Jennifer and Tanner Morrell; Amanda and Shane Hillyard as well as 19 grandchildren and a very large extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Paulette Burt and her grandson, Dietrich Crosby.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00 pm in the Smithfield Stake Center, 600 East 120 South. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 11:30 - 12:30 pm. Interment will take place in the Smithfield Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared online at
