Barbara Burt Hormell was born June 10, 1958, in Logan, Utah. She was the fourth child of S. Lyle and Maurine Turner Burt and her arrival in the family was greeted with excitement by siblings, parents and extended family. For her sisters, 7 and 5 years old, she was a beautiful little doll to play with and carry everywhere. The family moved to Southern California when she was just 2 weeks old and she did not return to live in Utah until 2004, when she and her three children moved to St. George to be near family.
Barbara attended schools in California, New Mexico and Houston, gaining groups of laughing girl friends and admiring boy friends along the way. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston, Texas, then attended Ricks College. She developed excellent office skills and her career consisted of several executive assistant and office manager positions. She particularly loved her work in the buyers department of JC Penney Corp and with St. George developer, Hansen Construction. Barbara returned to school and graduated with an associate paralegal degree in 2004. Through her adult life, Barbara played co-ed softball and "old lady soccer" whenever she could.
Barb and her husband Dennis Bell had a son, Christopher Jason, Jan. 9, 1983. Despite his mother not making it much past 5 feet and his father only slightly taller than that, Chris grew to be a 6' 2" young man with his tiny mother's face and a big personality. She and Dennis later divorced. Barbara married Tim Hormell and together they had William Patrick (Sept. 14, 1989) and Alexis Nicole Hormell (Dec. 12, 1991). Both are redheads who did get their mother's small stature and also her quick wit. Although Barb and Tim later divorced, they remained dear friends and Tim has been a friend and dad to all three children. Barbara's children have been her purpose and her anchor.
She is survived by her children, Christopher Bell, St. George, Will (Sara) Hormell (serving in Iraq), Lexie Hormell attending Dixie College in St. George; her parents Lyle and Maurine Burt, Logan; sisters Jayne (Greg) Johnson and Julie (Jeff) West, Salt Lake City; and brothers Patrick (Doree) Burt, Logan, and Timothy Burt, Charlotte, N.C. She has many aunts, uncles and cousins and she was a sassy favorite of her 14 nieces and nephews. Barb was cared for by her family, who deeply wish to thank her friends and coworkers for their kindnesses, Dr. Ryan Lewis and staff, Dr. Amer and staff at the St. George Huntsman Intermountain Cancer Center, and the IHC Hospice nurses and staff who were attentive, helpful and honest. Barbara wanted as much quality time as possible with those she loved and to have a great time and with a community of help, she did.
