LOGAN, UTAH: Barbara Elwood Petersen, 90, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Logan, Utah. She was born August 13, 1919, in Lewiston, Utah; the third daughter of George William and Vivian Elizabeth Seamons Elwood. Barbara grew up in Cache Junction and attended grades 1-8 in the Cache Junction School. During her high school years, her family moved to Cornish, Utah. Barbara was a graduate of North Cache High School, Richmond, Utah, in 1937. She married Russell Hawkes Petersen in the Logan Temple on October 5, 1938. They began married life in Cove, farming and ranching.
In 1943 they bought a dairy farm in Lewiston where they raised their family. In 1977, Russell retired, they sold their farm and moved to Logan. He passed away in 1983.
Barbara was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She serveq on the Stake Primary Board, in Mutual and Relief Society. For many years in Lewiston 3rd Ward, she was the Sunday School Secretary and was noted for her beautiful handwriting and meticulous'attention to accuracy. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, sewing and taking care of her home. Barbara was unable to attend college due to the depression era she grew up in, but she was determined that her children would have the chance and they did. Barbara was employed for 30 years as a dental assistant and office manager by Dr. Stratford Simpson in Logan. Her talents for organization, handling emergencies, financial acumen and just plain common sense served her well at home and in her work. She loved her job and made many friends. Anywhere Barbara went in Logan, former patients would recognize her and reminisce about their visits to the dentist. After retiring in 1994, she enjoyed serving as a volunteer at the Logan Temple and also in the Women's Center at the Logan Regional Hospital. Barbara served in the Relief Society in the 22nd Ward in Logan. She had many friends in her ward in Logan and loved traveling and attending musical events with them.
In 2001, Barbara experienced serious health problems and moved from her home in Logan to the Cache Valley Assisted Living in Providence, Utah. Her family would like to send thanks to the staff at Cache Valley Assisted Living. Her six years there were happy ones for her and her family.
Since July 2007, Barbara had been a resident at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family has very much appreciated all the time and caring attention the therapists, CNA's and nurses at Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation have given our mother and us. They showed kindness and loving concern for her well­being and were always so willing to help her in any way they could. Thank you to Dr. Vera Carlsen for her excellent care and to Rocky Mountain Hospice.
Barbara is survived by four of her children, Michael (Arlene) Petersen, Providence, Utah; Katherine Robinson, Las Vegas, Nevada; Jill (Ronald) Bliesner, Nibley, Utah; and Janet (Trevor) Hinesley, Farmington, Utah; 13 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Russell H. Petersen (1908-1983), and infant son, Mark (1952), preceded her in death. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Friday, October 2, 2009 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan. Friends and family may call from 10 am until 11:30 am on Friday morning at the Allen-Hall Mortuary prior to services.
