Bernice Geraldine Hawkes Stevenson Hansen
“GGB”
1923-2018
Harrisville - Our sweet mom, grandma, great-grandma, aunt and friend passed away peacefully in her sleep at home at the age of 95.
Born June 5, 1923 in Pocatello, Idaho to Joseph W. Hawkes and Amy L. Johnson Hawkes, the baby of her siblings, Helen, Irving and James. Bernice married her eternal sweetheart Don Winward Stevenson August 30, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple. Bernice was a devoted Army wife happily following Don around the globe to his various posts in Texas, Oklahoma, Oberammergau Germany, Arkansas and finally settling in Logan, Utah. Don preceded her in death on June 2, 1988. She called Logan home for 55 years, staying active in Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, serving 20 years as a “Pink Lady” at Logan Regional Hospital, weekly temple visits, an organ group and of course her treasured Book Club. Bernice married Burrell Hansen on August 24, 1991. He preceded her in death on July 11, 2005. After spending most of her life in Logan, Bernice moved to Harrisville, Utah with her grandson. Of course she made friends quickly and remained active in the activities she loved to do, just as she had in Logan. She was a dedicated visitor to the Ogden Temple and loved her new ward, the Harrisville 2nd Ward. Bernice was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in a number of church callings. She was blessed with two special friends, Kay Boyce and Sharon Cloud, who didn’t hesitate to help anytime Bernice or our family needed. They were angels to Bernice, and the family is truly grateful to them for their love and service. Of course anyone who knew Bernice couldn’t think of her without thinking of her famous chocolates, caramels and rolls! She loved making them and handing them out. After one taste, you were hooked! She loved shopping and always found the best deals! Her favorites being the DI, Dollar Tree and no shopping trip was ever complete without stopping at Kohl’s. Her class and style were evident in not only everything she wore, but in how she loved and served others with her kind and generous spirit. This past June she was able to celebrate her 95th birthday with a party in the park! She loved this day! Family and friends traveled from near and far to celebrate and visit this special lady. She was happy, active and sharp as a wit, even driving (to her family’s dismay) until shortly before her passing. Bernice is survived by her four children, Amy (Lanny) Crabb, Farr West, UT, Jeff Stevenson, Irene (Keith) Welch, Franklin, ID and Cheryl Murphy, Las Vegas, NV. 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews who looked to Bernice as a second mom. She is also survived by Burrell’s children, whom all loved her. She was preceded in death by her sweetheart Don and second husband Burrell, all three siblings and 1 great-grandson, Corben McGuire. The family would like to express a special thanks and appreciation to her grandson, Sam, who opened his home to her and made her last two years memorable and fun for her and for all the love and generosity he showed her. As a special tribute, if you are able, please wear a “splash” of blue.
