Berta Karoline Grossl, Providence Utah passed away peacefully but unexpectedly from a hemorrhagic stroke on September 21st, 2018 at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden. She was 85.
She was born on December 13, 1932 in Klagenfurt, Austria to Rudolf and Berta (Grossmann) Schottak. Berta earned her Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Restaurant Management from Bad Gleichenberg School of Tourism in 1955. In 1956 she married Armin Grossl in Klagenfurt and in the same year they moved to Chicago, Illinois where Armin completed an internship in General Medicine. She later supported him, caring for home and children (Yvonne, Paul, and Norman) while he specialized in Radiology, and continued to do so over the next thirty years as his career as a Radiologist flourished. During this time they lived in various locations in west central Illinois, and in Iron Mountain, Michigan. They retired to Providence, Utah, in 1996 where they could be closer to family and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Berta was devoted to her family. Our wellbeing and education were her priorities and she did everything possible to facilitate that. The devotion Armin and Berta had for one another during their sixty-one year marriage was truly exemplary. She loved cooking and was a talented chef, most often spoiling us with “five-star” Austrian style meals. Dinners were always a time of joy. She played piano and loved classical music, which was always playing in our home, and had an in-depth understanding of Italian and German operas. One of her proudest moments was in 2000, when she was sworn-in as an American citizen. She took her responsibility as a citizen very seriously, and would study all of the candidates and issues on the ballot before casting her vote. She always voted. Her charitable contributions were many, especially to the disadvantaged and suffering, and to neglected and abused animals. We were extremely blessed to have Berta in our lives and miss her greatly.
Berta is survived by her children Yvonne (Jean-Luc Ayne), Laverune, France; Paul (Cathy) Logan, and Norman (Andrea) St. Louis, MO; her sister Lisl (Janach) and sister-in-law Othilde (Kordesch) Klagenfurt, Austria, and six grandchildren Brock, Marie, Holton, Lauren, Jonathon, and Karina. She is preceded in death by her husband Armin; parents Rudolf and Berta Schottak and brothers Rudi and Franz Schottak, Klagenfurt, Austria.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday October 2nd at noon at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 725 S 250 E, Hyde Park, UT followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Berta may be made to Intermountain Annie Taylor Dee Guest House, 1124 E 4400 S, Ogden, UT 84403. The family would like to express their gratitude and affection to Sister Marilyn Mark for her loving care and compassion.
