PROVIDENCE- Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Betty Homan, passed away surrounded by loved ones on December 11, 2013, at the age of 92. She was born on November 3, 1921 in Beaver, Utah to Earl and Lorena Gillies. Her family later moved to Bell, California where she graduated from Huntington High School.
Betty married Kelly Homan on May 20, 1943; they were later sealed in the Los Angeles, California, LDS temple on October 20, 1964. After Kelly finished his service in the U.S. Air Force in La Junta, Colorado, they made their home on a cattle ranch in Cambridge, Nebraska, then in Buena Park, CA, and have settled in Providence, Utah for the past 30 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Linda Homan Kangas and Kay Homan.
Betty was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She left a remarkable and possibly unprecedented legacy of serving within the Young Women Organization for over 50 years. She served in nearly every leadership position, her favorites being that of Sports and Camp Director, and most recently, at 92, Assistant Secretary. She loved and cherished all of the young women and leaders with whom she served.
Betty enjoyed working as a civilian secretary for the U.S. Air Force in La Junta, Colorado for 3 years and as a secretary for the Orange County School District in CA for 20 years. She treasured the life-long friendships she made through her employment and church callings.
Betty was always delighted to visit with family, friends and neighbors, being the first to organize a party. She will be remembered for her annual neighborhood “Cowboy Round Up”, watermelon busts and holiday parties. She was overjoyed this past year when her family honored her and Kelly with a 70th Wedding Anniversary celebration.
Betty had a beautiful spirit and positive outlook on life. She found great happiness in spending quality time with others. Her dedication, humor and love will live on and not be forgotten.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Leon, Earl and Clark Gillies and her granddaughter Julie.
She is survived by her loving husband, two daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 19, 2013 at the Providence LDS Stake Center, 180 South 485 West Providence at 1:00 pm. A viewing will be held preceding the funeral from 11:30 to 12:30. Interment will be held at the Providence City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at
