Bonnie Rae Shumway

September 5, 1936 — February 20, 2010

NORTH LOGAN, UTAH - Bonnie Rae Shumway departed this life peacefully on February 20, 2010, surrounded by her family. She endured many physical challenges over the years, and fought bravely to stay with us as long as she could. She first arrived on September 5, 1936, the twelfth of thirteen children born to John Daniel and Katie Mae Tart Peacock. Raised in Mesa, Arizona, she graduated from Mesa High School where she was involved in many extracurricular activities such as A capella, Rabbettes, Band, and Performing Dance Club. She and her sister, Carol, were a singing and tap dancing team, and performed for many church and community programs.
Bonnie met her husband, Dante Leslie Shumway, while he was in the Air Force, stationed at Williams Air Force Base in Chandler, Arizona. They were married February 23, 1956, in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Their lives have been blessed by four bright and loving children: Angela (Ron) King, Murray; Katy Jo Stevens (Robert Miller), Sandy; Darren Leslie (Wendy) Shumway, Kaysville, and April Shumway, Salt Lake City.
Dante and Bonnie lived in Cove for many years, where they farmed and raised their children. They later moved to North Logan and Bonnie was able to attend USU. She loved to read, and felt that she had traveled the world and lived in other centuries through books, always giving credit to her reading as one of the greatest educations of her life. She belonged to two book discussion groups and relished the informal literary sisterhood of her neighborhood.
The greatest joy and fulfillment in her life was realized through her husband and children and as a homemaker. She was a collector and filled her home with beautiful things. She was an excellent cook and found so much joy working in her yard. She was ever fascinated by the power of words and wrote several short stories and essays. She won a poetry contest at BYU Women’s Conference in 1997 and was thrilled by the recognition.
Bonnie practiced the art of great conversation. She was curious, clever and insightful. She had a beautiful alto singing voice, and sought out opportunities to sing; in a band, her own performing group, and her ward choir.
A student of early American History, she realized her patriot’s dream of visiting Washington D.C. in 2007. She loved road trips with Dante and relished family reunions. She lived and loved her faith. She was an extraordinary teacher and held several leadership positions in all organizations of the LDS church.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Dante , their four children and six grandchildren: Joni Rose, Alecia, Andrea, Jason Daniel, Charles Mitchell, and Emma Leslie. She is also survived by two sisters and one brother: Wynell Stevens, Camp Verde, AZ; James Frank (Betty) Peacock, Queen Creek, AZ; Carol Mae (Merrill) Hawley, Conrad, Mt., and numerous loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and seven sisters.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 25 at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 26, at noon, at the North Logan Fourth Ward stake house, 2750 North 800 East , with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment, Franklin City Cemetery.
