Budd Monroe Kohler, age 91, passed away peacefully at his home on June 1, 2016, surrounded by his family. Budd was born on January 9, 1925, in Providence, Utah, to Fred and Bertha Kohler. The seventh of twelve children, he grew up on a farm where he learned the value of hard work. After graduating from South Cache High School, Budd joined the Navy and served in the Pacific Islands during World War II. While serving his country his ship was hit by a kamikaze pilot where he lost a number of his fellow servicemen.
After serving for three and half years, Budd returned home and began working in Victor, Idaho, where he met and fell in love with Leah Maxine Duke. On October 30, 1946, Budd and Maxine were married in the Idaho Falls Temple. After a few years in the Teton Valley, they moved to Providence where they built their home and raised their family. They are the parents of five children: DeWayne Kohler, Dennis (Janet) Kohler, Connie (Dave) Anderson, LeAnn (Dee) Ashcroft, and Tim (Amy) Kohler. Budd instilled in his children a strong work ethic. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they loved spending time with Grandpa Budd. He always had candy hidden for any grandchild who came to visit.
While raising his family in Cache Valley, Budd worked at Smith Brothers Lumber Company as a finish carpenter and cabinet maker. In 1962 he began working as a carpenter at Thiokol, where he worked for 25 years before retiring in 1987. Budd enjoyed working with his hands. He helped all of his children build their homes, including the cabinets and finish work. His talents in carpentry not only provided a living but also a hobby. Friends and family have enjoyed furniture, clocks, and cabinets made by Budd.
Budd enjoyed watching his sons play sports, especially basketball, baseball, and softball. He enjoyed picking apples from his orchard and working in his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. He also loved reading a good book and going on drives in the mountains.
Budd was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in various callings and for years was instrumental in the famous “Providence Turkey and Sauerkraut” dinners.
Budd is survived by his five children, 18 grandchildren, and 40 great grandchildren, a brother, Bob Kohler (Clearfield) and a sister, Donette Meacham (Logan). He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; parents, Fred and Bertha; five brothers, Grant, Dean, Datus, Rex, Kay; and four sisters, Lavona, Regina, Nora, and Elda.
A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary on Friday, June 10, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Family and friends will then proceed to the Providence Cemetery where a graveside service with military honors will be held.
