Calvin Clair Atkins, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away of causes incident to age on March 24, 2010. He was 88 years old.
Cal was born in Providence, Utah, on May 13, 1921, to William Townsend and Annie Schmidt Atkins. He grew up in Providence and joined the U.S. Navy in 1940, where he was assigned to serve aboard the USS Minneapolis. He was on board the “Minnie” outside Pearl Harbor when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. He served his country for eight years, receiving commendations, and was honorably discharged in 1948.
He married Pat (Fola) Gates on May 28, 1946, and their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on March 28, 1957. Together they raised three sons: Calvin Eugene (Gene), Cordell and William (Bill).
After his discharge from the Navy, Cal worked as a carpenter for several years, then for Anderson Lumber Company for another 30 plus years. He completed his working career employed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he faithfully maintained the Logan, Utah, Mt. Logan Stake Center. He took great pride in keeping the building and grounds clean and well maintained.
Cal enjoyed work and his family—especially his grandchildren—and hunting, fishing and gardening. Sharing fresh produce from his large garden with family, friends and neighbors gave him great satisfaction.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pat, five brothers, William, Roland, Robert, Cordell, and Harold, two sisters, Hazel (Sorenson) and Dorothy (Shores) and a granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Atkins (Hobson).
The family would like to thank the staff at the Highland Care Center for their kind and thoughtful care during Cal’s last weeks.
Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Logan Stake Center, 565 East 100 South, on Tuesday, March 30 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary on Monday evening, March 29 from 6:00–8:00 p.m., and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service at the Mt.
