Carole Spendlove Jewkes

Carole Spendlove Jewkes, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, age 83 of Providence, UT passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023, while surrounded by family.

Carole was born on December 26, 1939, at home in Salt Lake City, UT. Her parents, George Arthur Spendlove and Flora Valear Stevens lovingly referred to her as their “Christmas Carole” thus beginning her lifelong love of music.

Carole adored her parents and siblings and learned her love and compassion from them. She and her sisters were three peas in a pod always watching over their older brother who had an intellectual impairment. As children, they took piano and vocal lessons and performed wherever they went – even for dignitaries! As a military service family, they lived in many states. Carole would later say that her favorite school memories were singing in the choir. Carole also learned to be industrious and carried that quality with her throughout her life.

In 1958, Carole married Donald David Marcyes and they were blessed with four children: Becky, David, Linda, and Victor. Carole and David would later divorce.

In 1969, Carole met her eternal sweetheart, Sherril Grant Jewkes, and they married on February 5, 1970. Grant brought to the marriage six additional children: Donald, Cherylee, Becky Lynn, Boyd, Jerry, and Kathy. Soon they added to the family their last child, Tom. They were later sealed in the Provo Temple and settled in Pleasant Grove, UT to raise their family.

Being musically gifted, Carole taught her now 11 children to sing and perform at venues across Utah Valley. She participated in ward choirs and organized school choruses. She was also an avid writer/creator. She recorded daily in her journals for over 3 decades and donated them to the LDS Family History Library late in life. She also wrote a children’s book and a nursing home Recreation Manual; memorized hundreds of quotes; created a children’s gospel computer game; and published articles in the Ensign.

Being married to Grant, she quickly came to love camping and attended the annual Jewkes Reunion in Joe’s Valley, UT almost every year.

As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carole served in numerous capacities throughout her life. Most notable were the three missions she served with her husband, Grant: first in the Salt Lake Addiction Recovery Program; second in the East Lansing, Michigan LDS Institute; and third as teachers in the Mountain Crest High School Special Needs Seminary. In 2003, Grant and Carole moved to Providence, UT. In their retirement, they served faithfully as temple workers and attended at least one temple session nearly every week.

Most of all, Carole was a force for good. She was fearless when helping others. She was kind, thoughtful, and forever friendly. She had a way of making everyone feel important and a gift for seeking out those in need of her sweet love and abounding heart. She was patient, forgiving, and accepting – always seeing the good in others. She loved God first with her dear husband as a close second. She was a pillar of faith, constantly sharing her testimony with others. There is no way to measure the impact Carole had on this world, but as one grandchild stated, “To know her was to know LOVE.” We will never forget Double-Dutch, “The Worm Song,” Happy Birthday calls, her endless compliments, her sweet smiling eyes, her loving hugs and kisses, and watching her spryly dance with her sweetheart.

Carole is survived by her eleven children: Donald Grant (Denise) Jewkes of Murray, UT;  Cherylee Jewkes of Farmington, UT; Becky Marcyes (Gary) James of Pleasant Grove, UT; Becky Lynn (Richard) Leach of Pleasant Grove, UT; David (Raquel) Marcyes of River Heights, UT; Boyd (Kerri) Jewkes of Kaysville, UT; Gerald (Maile) Jewkes of Orem, UT; Linda (Bob) Brady of South Jordan, UT; Kathy Roush (Craig Doelfel) of Farmington, UT; Victor (Annette) Jewkes of North Logan, UT; and G. Tom (Teresa) Jewkes of Paradise, UT. She is the grandmother of 41 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren with more on the way.

A viewing will be held Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 E Center St, Logan, UT. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 11:00 am at the Cobblestone 1st Ward meetinghouse, 420 W 100 N, Providence, UT, with a viewing beforehand from 9:30-10:30 am. Interment will be in the Providence City Cemetery at 925 River Heights Blvd, River Heights, UT.  Funeral services will be broadcast live on Zoom from www.allenmortuaries.com
