Charles Farrel Mortensen, 85, completed the mortal phase of his life on May 1, 2013. He was born to Christian “Farrel” and Veronica Mortensen in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 4, 1929. His mother died when he was 4 years old. He and his sister, Jeannette, were raised in Sugar City, Idaho by their grandmother Mortensen.
He met a beautiful young woman, Donna Faye Naylor, at a Christmas dance in 1948 while attending Utah State University, and married her for time and eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 9, 1949. He worked as an aeronautical engineer for Boeing Aircraft, and worked with the development team for the first manned moon landing.
During the first 30 years of their marriage, Charlie and Donna lived in nine different States across the United States. In each location Charlie taught his family the Gospel of Jesus Christ, by word and deed. He was an influence for good to numerous individuals and had a genuine love for each of them. Charlie’s interests include being with his family, family history, gardening, gospel study, reading and aeronautics.
After 30 years of being away from Logan, Charlie and his sweetheart, “Tweetie Pie”, returned to Logan, living in Donna’s childhood home. Charlie continued his devoted life to Donna and to his faith – helping and serving when and where he could. A day or two before his passing, he announced that he had a new “calling”. When quizzed about the nature of the calling he thoughtfully responded, “I don’t know…but I will faithfully serve.” Charles Farrel Mortensen is a disciple of Jesus Christ, and still serves his Master.
Charlie is the father of five children-Diana (Raymond) Blackwood, JoAnn (Michael) Hermansen, David (Sherrie) Mortensen, Alan Mortensen, and Marcia Mortensen. He loved his children, and with his beloved Donna, taught them to love and serve the Lord. To his children, 13 grandchildren, and ?? great-grandchildren, he has been a beacon of love, patience, and service.
Charlie is preceded in death by his beloved wife, his parents, and two grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, his children, and his children’s children. He is also survived by 3 sister-in-laws Janet Naylor, Sharon Naylor, and Leah Christensen as well as an extended family of loving nieces and nephews.
He is a wonderful and delightful man and will be missed until we meet him again.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday May 4, 2013, in the Crockett Ward building, 325 Lauralin Dr in Logan. A viewing will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E.
