Logan

Charles Bedell Pyke, a distinguished meteorologist and devoted scholar, passed away on November 11, 2024, in Logan, Utah, at the age of eighty-five.

Born on January 26, 1939, in Los Angeles, California, Charles demonstrated an early aptitude for science and music. He pursued his academic journey at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a doctorate in atmospheric science. His dissertation focused on El Niño, a subject that would shape his career and establish him as a respected authority in meteorology.

Charles dedicated two decades of his professional life to the Los Angeles Army Corps of Engineers before purchasing a weather forecasting business. His expertise extended beyond forecasting; he served as an expert witness in the OJ Simpson murder trial in Los Angeles and made multiple appearances on local television weather segments. After selling the business, he continued contributing to the field as a forensic meteorological consultant.

Beyond his professional achievements, Charles had a deep appreciation for music. A gifted pianist from the age of ten, he played at family gatherings and even composed a symphony. His love for history—especially family history—was evident in his remarkable ability to recall dates and events with precision. He enjoyed sharing these stories and took considerable pride in preserving his family's legacy.

Charles also had a strong sense of faith and spiritual curiosity. Early in life, he explored the Christian Science religion, and later, at the age of 84 in October 2023, he was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Frederick Pyke, and Bernice Alice Bedell Pyke. He is survived by his cousins Joan Bedell Hortin and Susan Bedell McMahon, along with many friends and colleagues who cherished his wisdom and companionship. The final resting place is Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale California.

Charles Bedell Pyke’s legacy as a scientist, musician, historian, mentor, and friend will be fondly remembered by those whose lives he touched. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
