Charles Arthur Adam, Jr.

October 10, 1917 — January 9, 2009

Charles Arthur Adam, Jr., a resident of Hyde Park, Utah, died on January 9, 2009, at the age of 91.
He grew up in Houston, Texas, where he was born October 10, 1917. His parents were Charles Arthur Adam, Sr. and Claire Johnson Adam. As a young man, he drove in dirt track races, and he continued to enjoy driving throughout his life.
He joined the Army in 1940 and advanced to the rank of second lieutenant, then transferred to the Air Corps and became a pilot. He served his country for five years in active duty in the United States and Europe during World War II and earned the rank of major.
On February 9, 1942, Charles married Betty Louise McDonald in Brownwood, Texas. After the war, they moved to Mercedes, Texas, where he worked for his father at the family-owned canning plant, Adams-Heaner Company. He later worked as general manager of several industrial laundries in New Mexico, California and Colorado. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was the vice-president and plant manager of a manufacturing company in El Paso, Texas.
In 1997, Charles and Betty moved to Hyde Park and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were sealed together in the Logan LDS Temple on August 19, 1998. Betty died on November 13, 1998. Charles was a high priest in the Hyde Park 7th Ward and diligently served in his church callings.
When Charles and Betty moved to Utah, they were deeply touched by the outpouring of kindness shown to them, and were motivated to extend the same kindness and friendship to others. Following the death of his wife, Charles learned how to make bread and shared hundreds of loaves of bread with families in his neighborhood. He also brightened the day of many people with greeting cards, ice cream, visits, and his contagious laughter. For many years, he enjoyed the challenge of growing large tomatoes.
Charles is survived by his children: Peggy (Roy) Brazell of Hyde Park, Claire (Roy) Julian of Sedona, Arizona, and David (Lynn) Adam of Oak Harbor, Washington; and eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, January 12, at the Hyde Park 7th Ward chapel, 65 E. Center St., with Bishop Art Lancaster conducting. Friends may call from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening at Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North. Burial will be in the Hyde Park Cemetery.
The family would like to express their appreciation and heartfelt gratitude for the friendship and caring so generously given to Charles by his many friends and neighbors.
