Charles Bassett Harris, formerly of River Heights, passed away Sept. 7, 2006, at age 99.
Charlie was born to Frank and Rose Harris on Dec. 13, 1906, in Logan. He grew up loving music and played the banjo with the Harris Family Orchestra for dances throughout the region during the 1920s. Charlie married Burdette Nielsen on June 27, 1928, in the Logan LDS Temple. They were blessed with a daughter, Janet, who was the center of their lives. Charlie and Burdette also enjoyed caring for a niece, Barbara Whitney Jessop.
Charlie worked at Leven’s clothing store for 41 years. After he retired, he tuned pianos for Logan City Schools, Utah State University, and many others including numerous artists such as Olivia Newton-John, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, John Denver, Elton John and Billy Joel, whom he once chastised for pounding on the keys.
He was known for his beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, his love of baseball (a die-hard Cubs fan), and especially his kind and gentle nature.
Charlie was grandfather to five granddaughters, 22 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great-grandchildren. As granddaughters, we remember trips to the county fair, mornings at the library, floating wooden boats in the ditches of Logan, days on the beach at Bear Lake, one-of-a-kind bedtime stories and Neapolitan ice cream.
Charlie is survived by his daughter, Janet and her husband, Dr. W. Blair Low of Ogden. Preceding him in death were his wife of 63 years; his parents; two brothers, Newman and Vaughan; and two sisters, Afton and Tessie.
Our most sincere thanks to those who have cared for Charlie: his good friend, Dean Hicken; his son-in-law, Blair; and especially his hospice aid and “angel,” Laura.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Providence Cemetery.
