HN Charles “Otter” Otto Sare

Naval Corpsman Charles Otto Sare, 23, was killed in combat in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq on Oct. 23, 2006.
He was born Dec. 3, 1982, in Hemet, Calif., to Charles Edwin Sare and Victoria Lynette Carver.
He graduated from Hemet High School in 2001.
Charles was affectionately known by his family and friends as “Otter,” a nickname that he had been given at birth. He had an infectious smile and brightened every room that he walked in to. He loved to be around people and to help anyone that he could, no matter if he knew you or not. Otter enjoyed everything about life and rarely turned down any opportunity to spend time with family and friends. He was a wonderful son and a great friend to everyone around him. He made friends easily because he cared about others more than he cared about himself.
He loved his country and was proud to be an American. Otter went to boot camp with the Navy in November of 2004 and became a corpsman with the Navy. He was given the choice of whether he wanted hospital duty or combat duty, he unselfishly chose combat. Otter had a great desire to be a fireman/paramedic and wanted to get the best training that he could to achieve this dream. He loved every minute of being a corpsman and would frequently call his mother to tell her what new medical skill he had learned. He was excited about his job and loved it because he was able to help others. In his letters and e-mails he told his family that the soldiers in Iraq were making a difference and that many of the Iraqis were thankful for their service there.
Otter is our hero. “A hero is someone who could have taken the easier road, but chose not to; could have avoided the sacrifice, but walked toward it.” Otter, you will be missed by many and stand as an example all of us.
He is survived by his mother, Victoria Carver, his father, Charles Edwin Sare, his brother, Matthew Sare, and his grandparents, Arlis and Lynette Anderson. He is also survived by his step-father, Jon Carver, step-mother, Karen Sare, his step-sister, Steffanie Carver and five step-brothers, Adam Carver, Bryan Carver, Prince Williams, Chaz Ingram and Scuyler Ingram.
