Charles V. Jarman

July 3, 1924 — October 8, 2009

“Charlie Jarman no longer resides at 385 North 300 East, Kaysville, Utah. He is now located in the Logan City Cemetery.” His unassuming words do not tell the true story of an American hero. Charles Vernon Jarman spent his life fighting through battles in Hell and assured his place in Heaven.
Dad was born in Cheboygan, Michigan on 3 July 1924 then traveled to Everett, Washington where he grew up. Through the Great Depression he held his head high, playing his homemade violin and delivering the Everett Herald on his bicycle. He joined the Marine Corps at 17 to fight in WWII and proceeded to go to the USAC where he discovered the best deal of all in the Woolworth’s 5 and 10 cent store: his “million dollar baby”, Joyce Hickman whom he wooed through the mail during battles on the islands of the Pacific. Marrying upon his return, together Charlie and Joyce raised 3 daughters as he went back to fight in Korea and Viet Nam. He started as a backwoods private in WWII and went on to serve as a battalion commander in Viet Nam, a Colonel on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and as a Professor of Naval Science at Purdue University. His valor in the face of danger was honored numerous times by receiving the Legion of Merit, the Navy/Marine Corps Medal for acts of heroism, among many others.
Not relying on the strength of his hands alone, Dad was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1961 and sealed to his beloved wife and daughters in 1962. He was the most dedicated home teacher, showing in every deed, his desire to render his life unto Christ. Dad, you were never “rotten, mean, and ornery” but were the perfect example of love, bravery, and kindness in all that you did.
Charlie rejoined his beloved Joyce on Oct.8, 2009 for a long awaited celestial second honeymoon. He leaves behind 3 daughters, Becky Jarman, Janeen (Dennis) Ballif, and Jill (Frank) Gerrish; 11 grandchildren, Jenny, Megan (Russell), Robert (Kelly), Captain Elizabeth, USAF, Elder Alex, Rosie, Livvy, Gabe, Ella; 4 great-grandchildren, Matt, Kori, Brenden, and Ammon; and sister, Marvel Cummings, and brother Nick Jarman. Grandpa, you always threw the best Halloween parties and Easter Egg Hunts. You take care of all the dogs and cats that are waiting and we’ll take care of your good friends, Monty, Nicky, Mo, and Maddy here. We love you, Dad.
A graveside service for this unpretentious hero will be held 12 noon, Monday, October 12, 2009 at Logan City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net
