Clair Lyman Roberts

June 26, 1917 — January 7, 2008

Clair L. Roberts, age 90 ½ years, died in his sleep of causes incident to agedness and a short illness.

He was born in a homestead log cabin in Crosby, North Dakota June 26, 1917, the son and only child of Pearless “Paul” Lyman Roberts and Dorothea Edna Alcock.

He spent his childhood and young adult years on his father’s homestead cattle ranch in an area of lower Saskatchewan called the “Big Muddy”.

At age 20 he left Canada for California, to learn of aviation and aircraft production. In 1939 he began working for Lockheed Aircraft and continued his employment in the aircraft/aeronautical industry until his retirement from Boeing Company in 1980.

In 1939 he married his sweetheart from Bengough, Saskatchewan, Isabel Berget Sjogren. Tragically, she died of head injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident near Beaver, Utah very shortly after their baptisms into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Clair met Hilma Ruth Moulton of “Mormon Row”, near Jackson, Wyoming at a church dance in Burbank, California, and they married in the LDS Mesa, Arizona Temple on 20 April 1943. Together they were the parents of two children, Paul Aaron, and Ruth Ann Roberts.

Clair served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946, the majority of that time as apart of the Army of the Occupation of Japan. While there, he participated in the conversion and baptism of Eugene Johnson, the first non-Japanese convert to join the church following the war.

Clair graduated from Utah State Agricultural College (USU) in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Education.

He believed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in the callings given him, as a hometeacher, Gospel Doctrine teacher and Priesthood teacher, and in two Bishoprics. No matter where he and his family lived, from Seattle to Slidell, from Huntsville to Wellsville, the church was the focus of his life, and his lifelong pursuit of gospel knowledge.

Clair was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Isabel, and his wife, Hilma, a granddaughter, Lisa Erin Roberts, and a grandson, Jonah Gage. He is survived by his son, Paul (Judith) Roberts of Brigham City, and his daughter, Ruth Ann Roberts, of Wellsville, by five grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, January 10, at the Wellsville 3rd Ward Chapel, 660 South 100 West in Wellsville. A viewing will be held from 10 am to 11:30 am prior to services at the church. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery.
