Clarke Poppleton Maughan

WELLSVILLE, UTAH: Clarke Poppleton Maughan passed from this life on Sunday, March 4, 2012, at his home in Wellsville. Clarke was born on September 15, 1921 in Wellsville to Guy H and Emma Poppleton Maughan. He married Ruth Allen Hendry on November 12, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. In June, 2010, he married Clara Larsen Maughan.
He attended school in Wellsville at the Floradell Elementary and Wellsville Junior High. His high school years were spent at South Cache High in Hyrum where he was active in sports, lettering in football and basketball. He graduated from the Utah State Agricultural College and remained a loyal Aggie.
He was called to active duty in the US Army in 1943 and served during World War II in the Phillipine Islands and Japan. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to Wellsville where he taught the Veterans On-the-Farm Training Program.
In addition to farming and milking cows, Clarke served as the Postmaster of Wellsville for almost 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a Volunteer Fireman for over 30 years and was an active member of the Wellsville Lions and Amvet Clubs. Clarke was Chairman of the Wellsville Tabernacle Foundation and spent countless hours devoted to the restoration and maintenance of the Wellsville Tabernacle.
Clarke has always been active in the LDS Church where he served faithfully in teaching and leadership callings. He served twice as Bishop of the Wellsville 1st Ward. In 1991, Clarke and Ruth served a mission in Fresno, California, working with the Cambodian people. He served 18 years as an officiator at the Logan LDS Temple.
Clarke is survived by his wife, Clara, Wellsville, and 5 children: Marilyn (Joe) Smith, Phoenix, Arizona; Marci (Mark) Clements, Gainesville, Georgia; Michelle Lyle, Wellsville; Allan (Dixie) Maughan, Ivins, Utah; and Brian (Cheri’) Maughan, Wellsville. He is also survived by a niece and nephew, Janice (Kelly) Reese, Benson; and Glade (Suzette) Smith, Wellsville. He has 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Zaida Wallace. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, a son, Steven Clarke, and a granddaughter, Ashton Maughan.
A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E Center, Logan, Utah, on Thursday, March 8, 2012, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at noon on Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Wellsville Stake Center, 30 S Center Street, Wellsville. A viewing will precede the service at the Stake Center from 10:30-11:30. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wellsville Tabernacle Foundation, P. O. Box 166, Wellsville, UT 84339.
