C. Chad Orton passed away Friday, January 24, 2025, peacefully in his home surrounded by his children.

Chad was born June 25, 1933, to Claude T. Orton and Ruby Mortensen Orton in Parowan Utah. He graduated from Parowan High School in 1951. He attended two years at Utah State University and then was called to serve in the Western Canadian mission in 1953.

When Chad returned home, while waiting for his draft call, he met the love of his life one Sunday at church. It was love at first sight and they soon were making wedding plans. He was called to the Navy and went to Boot Camp. He returned to marry Beth Marie Anderson in the St. George Temple on November 30, 1956. He then finished out his military term in 1960 with an honorable discharge.

The couple then returned to Utah State University to complete his Master’s degree. They were dorm parents to 209 girls at Merrill Hall. Chad and Beth gave birth to their first child Suzanne Marie while attending college. Soon after college, Chad took a job at Duchesne High School as an educator and where he enjoyed coaching basketball. He was so excited when the Duchesne High Eagles beat the big city team of the Uintah High Utes!

Chad and Beth moved to Vernal Utah two years later where he started a 33 year long career as a coach, teacher and guidance counselor. Chad loved sports and very much enjoyed coaching and teaching the art of the game as well as leadership and teamwork to his players. During his time at Uintah High School in Vernal, Chad received many awards. One of which was guidance counselor of the year.

While Chad and Beth were in Vernal, their family grew. Three more children were added to their family, Gary Niels, Karyn (Billy Robbins) and Steven A. (Becky), Joshua (Christie).

Dad appreciated beautiful music and he had an amazing tenor voice. His voice was first recognized when he was in high school. and often throughout his life he was asked to sing in church choirs, weddings, funerals and many other special occasions.

Chad is a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Chad loves the gospel and he held many callings within the church. He served as Elders Quorum president, a high councilman, bishop, first counselor in the stake presidency and he was later called as the music coordinator for the dedication sessions of the Vernal Utah Temple. One of Chad‘s greatest treasures was when he was called as a temple sealer in the Vernal Utah Temple. He was set apart by President James E. Faust. Chad enjoyed attending and serving in the Vernal Utah Temple as an ordinance worker and sealer and later in the Logan Utah Temple as a sealer.

Chad and Beth moved to Cache Valley after his retirement where they enjoyed family and close new friends in the Nibley area. He continued to love growing trees, flowers and his garden. His friends and neighbors loved his corn on the cob he would hand deliver even as recently as last fall.

Our Dad: Faithful scripture study and sharing his testimony, Teaching (especially the Gospel of Jesus Christ), Listening to his “beautiful music” loudly, and of course, Engaging with nature and God’s creations.

Chad is greatly loved and survived by his children, 10 grandchildren: Joshua M., Madalyn Nicole, Ashlie Marie, Kayla Grace, Kaleb Chad, Stevie Marie, Brady Steven and 17 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law David and Mary Etta Orton, three sister-in-laws Denise Anderson, Ruth (Larry) Avery, Connie Anderson, brother-in-law Robert (Ruth) Anderson and several nieces and nephews.
