Colleen Poppleton Leatham, widow of Jack (John O.) Leatham, mother of Valorie, Marcene, Jaclyn (Jackie) and Carl, passed away Monday, July 15th 2013 of respiratory failure. She was the oldest of six children, born June 8, 1926, to William Larsen and Elsie Brown Poppleton in Wellsville.
Growing up in the community of her pioneer ancestors, she was a farm girl learning the importance of good work ethics and being dependable. She liked riding the derrick horse to put the hay into the barn. Thinning, hoeing and topping beets wasn’t too bad of a job to earn money for school clothes.
She attended the Floradell Elementary and Wellsville Jr. High Schools in Wellsville, graduating in 1944 from South Cache High School and Seminary in Hyrum. She especially liked playing the clarinet in the South Cache High School band. “A parade isn’t a parade without a band to give you goose bumps”, she always said.
Working locally for the next two years, she was then called to serve an LDS mission to the North Central States Mission serving in Minnesota and North Dakota. Upon her return, she and Jack were married and sealed in the Logan LDS Temple, September 24, 1948. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary plus another two years before Jack passed away, 3 June 2000.
Colleen loved the gospel and served faithfully in all the organizations from being a dance director in the MIA, secretarial positions, teaching classes or as President of Ward and Stake Young Women as well as Ward and Stake Relief Society. Serving in the Logan Temple as an officiator with Jack was a wonderful experience.
Colleen enjoyed being a club member of the Wellsville Literary and appreciated her member-ship in the Peter Maughan Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
Mom is survived by her children Valorie (Brad) Hall, Marcene (Ralph) Parker, Jaclyn (Rock E) Anderson, and Carl (Karma Brown) all of Wellsville, 14 grandchildren and their spouses, 27 great-grandchildren with a new one due in December, sister Ruth (Richard L. Maughan), brother Don B. (Karen S.) Poppleton, sister-in-law Elthea Leatham Sanders, nieces, nephews and cousins dear to her. Mom was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jack, sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Ray Bingham, and two infant siblings, special family members who had an impact for good in her life.
We would like to give a special thanks to Nathan McCulloch of Cache Valley Oxygen, Dr. Steven Salisbury and staff, the Logan Regional Hospital ICU staff and the Respiratory Care Team for their love, concern and tender compassionate care to our mother.
Services will be held Monday, July 22 at noon in the Wellsville 4th Ward building, 195 South Center, Wellsville, Utah. Viewing will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 8 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 East Center, Logan, and from 10:30 to 11:30 at the church prior to her services.
