Colleen Humphreys Smith, 82, passed away on August 21, 2011. Colleen had struggled with health challenges for the past two years. She fell Saturday night in the nursing home and broke her hip. During surgery to repair it, she had a heart attack and passed away. Colleen had been living in Nephi near her daughter, Patti, for most of the past two years.
Colleen was born in College Ward, Utah on October 22, 1928 to Angus Leroy and Margaret C. Nielson Humphreys. Colleen married Wm. Alan Smith on February 14, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple.
Colleen’s childhood was spent on the family farm in College Ward where she learned the great qualities of earnest labor, serving others, loving our Heavenly Father, cooking, sewing and many other qualities which were of great value and praiseworthy. She shared all of these attributes with the five children she and Alan raised.
As a fairly young woman and mother, Colleen wanted to help make sure the children all had opportunities to develop their skills and talents, so she joined the workforce in order to earn a little extra for piano and dance lessons, as well as sports and scouting activities. She worked for Logan Dry Cleaners for a number of years, then went to work with Walgreens. She stayed with Walgreens through many names changes and finally retired so she could spend more time with good family, friends and especially her grandchildren.
Colleen was a very dedicated member of the LDS church and spent years of service in callings of all kinds. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker and was always willing to share what she could with others. She loved family occasions of which there were many. Willow Park, Bear Lake, Downata Hot Springs, Lava Hot Springs, and Logan Canyon were all favored spots to meet for picnics, holidays and birthdays.
Colleen is survived by her five children: Marsha Shepherd (Larry) Buhl, ID; Blaine Smith (Patricia) Graham, WA; Debra Johnson (Richard) Sugar City, ID; Craig Smith (Ana) Mesa, AZ; and Patti Allsop (Brian) Nephi, UT. There are 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren (one who was born the same day Colleen passed away). Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alan, and all of her siblings: Irene, Mervin, Don, Orvin, Lola, Jean and Laree.
The family is having a viewing at Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 East Center Street in Logan, Utah on Friday, August 26, from 9AM to 10:30AM. At 11:00 AM there will be a graveside memorial/tribute to Colleen by family and those who would care to participate at the Logan City Cemetery, 1000 North 1200 East in Logan. Friends and relatives are invited to share this time. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at
