Dale Rulon Steed
Dale Rulon Steed passed away May 15, 2010 in St. George, Utah after a long and fruitful life of 94 years. He died of complications after sustaining a broken bone while riding his bicycle. He was born May 3, 1916 in Clearfield, Utah to Walter W. Steed Jr. and Elma Cook Steed. After graduating from Davis High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Utah State University in 1937. He also attended Chouinard’s School of Art in Los Angeles. Some of his artwork was displayed in the Los Angeles Museum.
He married Elizabeth Emmett on March 8, 1942 while at U.S. Army Basic Training at Camp Roberts during World War II. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Dale and Beth raised three children in Logan, Utah. After Beth’s passing in 1996, Dale married Erma Griggs, widow of Archie Griggs. Dale, Beth, Erma, and Archie had been good friends since college.
After the War, Dale used the GI Bill to attend the Tasope School of Photoengraving in Aurora, Missouri. He returned to Logan and formed a partnership with his good friend and fraternity brother, Max Brunson, in a small printing business. As business increased, Dale founded Steed’s Printing Plate Company, which he operated until retirement.
Dale was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and supported two sons on full-time missions. He was a long-time member of the Logan Lions Club and served in various offices, including president; he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at USU. Dale enjoyed his hobbies of rock hounding and silversmithing.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth and daughter Barbara Brown. He is survived by his wife Erma, his son Emmett (Jana) of Cedar City, Utah, his son Martin (Lynda) of Centerville, Utah, a son-in-law Ronald Brown of Bellevue, Washington, nine grand children, and 15 great grand children.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the LDS Hillcrest 2nd Ward, 875 North 1500 East in Logan. A viewing for family and friends will be held prior to the funeral services from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Church. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
