Daniel Jerome Ringle

May 6, 1918 — October 8, 2005

Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Jerome Ringle, a valiant son of our Heavenly Father, was finally allowed to go home to be with his dear wife, son, and greatly missed mother. His passing took place peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2005.
Dan was born May 6, 1918, in Sycamore, Kansas, the only child of Fred Funston and Edith Opal Daniel Ringle. His mother died when he was seven months old, and his paternal grandparents raised him. He learned to work hard, milking cows, hauling haying, and doing all kinds of farm work. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and was an excellent student. His love of sports began at this early time and he excelled in running. He ran the mile in the Kansas state relays, a talent he passed on to his eldest son Daniel, who ran the mile in high school.
After graduating from high school, he decided to leave the farm and crisscrossed the western states until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at age 19. He distinguished himself as a sharpshooter and was assigned to the Embassy Guard in Peking, China. He served in China during the Sino-Japanese War and because of his love for the Chinese; he would sneak out of the Embassy and help them defend themselves against the invading Japanese. While in the Marines, he played softball, ice hockey, and was the Battalion boxing champion (26-0, with 26 KO's). After 3 years in China, he served one year in the Philippines.
In July of 1941, he met Luana Harris while visiting an aunt in Ray, Arizona. They were lined up on a blind date and soon she became the love of his life. They were married on July 8, 1943. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
In January 1942, just weeks after the invasion of Pearl Harbor, Dan joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. While training in Texas and Florida, he was commissioned an officer. His flying career was cut short due to eye difficulties. In harmony with his love of flight, he became an air traffic controller with an assignment in California, and then the Pentagon. In Washington D.C. Daniel Jerome II (Montana) was born in 1947. As a Captain now in the Air Force he went to the Berlin Air Lift. In 1950 David was born in Frankfurt.
Dan took his family to Texas, where he was a training officer. Debra was born there in 1952. In Texas, Dan joined the LDS Church and took his wife and three children to the Salt Lake Temple to be sealed as afamily for time and all eternity. His next assignment was in Pittsburgh, California. In 1954 Major Ringle was called to be the first Bishop of the Pittsburgh-Antioch Ward. After being set apart by Apostle George Q. Morris, he was asked to build the first chapel in the area. He would take his children with him as he spent endless hours working on the chapel and overseeing a ward that covered 50 square miles. Here Darlyn (1955) and Donald (1956) were born.
Dan's next assignment was in Okinawa. While serving as the Base
Personnel Officer, he was called to serve as District President. While there, Delane was born in 1958. The family traveled from Okinawa to Montgomery, Alabama where the children were privileged to meet his
father and second wife Hazel, and their children Betty, Colleen, Barbara, Marcilee, Kay, and Fred, and then to Logan where Dan was a Professor of Military Science at Utah State University. After serving for 23 years in the military, Dan retired in 1960 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, while completing both Bachelors and Masters Degrees at USU. Douglas was born in 1963. He spent the next 23 years teaching in the Ogden School District.
Daniel was never idle. His life was full of gardening, raising bees, nurturing roses and never-ending building projects. For more than 30 years he took tickets at all kinds of USU events. From the Nelson Field House to the Spectrum, from the old Football Stadium to Romney Stadium, hundreds of thousands passed through his doors and gates. He served as the American Legion Post Commander. His greatest success was being an exemplary father and husband. He was an honest, hard-working man, who taught his children that nothing was too hard to accomplish. He served as the Executive Secretary in the Logan 24 th Ward Bishopric. He was a "kid's man", coaching baseball, softball, basketball, and playing lots of golf with his sons. He took teams to All-Church play-offs many times. He was an avid Scouter, working on his Eagle as a Scoutmaster until the National Council told him he was too old. He was a great example of service as he adored and served his beloved "Lou", and together they were blessed to serve as proselyting missionaries in the Texas, Lubbock Mission.
Daniel is survived by his six of seven children, David (Diane) of Burley, Idaho, Debbie (Bruce) Barker of Cedar City, Utah, Darlyn (Dewey) Allen of Providence, Don (Jodi) of Louisville, Colorado, De (Jordan) Funk of Altrus, California, and Doug (Lisa) of Logan. Four sisters Betty and Marcilee of Kansas and Barbara and Kaye of
He was preceded in death by his eternal companion Luana Harris Ringle (Lou) who passed away on his birthday May 6, 2005 and his eldest son, Daniel J. Ringle (Montana) who died in 1994. Also, his parents and brother Fred and sister Colleen.
