Darwin Blaine Nielsen

PROVIDENCE, UTAH - Darwin Blaine Nielsen, 78, died peacefully surrounded by his family on 27 February 2011 in Providence, UT.

Darwin was born 26 September 1932 in Hyrum, UT to Blaine Loyd and Ruby Cooper Nielsen. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from South Cache High School in 1950. In 1951 he joined the Air Force and served in Texas, California, Japan and New Mexico.

On 31 July 1952 he married Zoe Lee Maughan in the Logan Temple. Four sons were born to this couple, Darwin Layne, Scott Maughan, Kent Blaine and James Robert Nielsen.

After discharge from the Air Force Darwin returned to Cache Valley, where he began attending Utah State University along with working on the family dairy farm. He graduated from USU with a Bachelor and Masters degrees. He then attended Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon where he received his Ph.D. in Economics. After spending a year and a half working for the USDA in Bozeman,Montana, he returned to USU and began his teaching career. He retired in 1997. While at USU, he was honored with the Distinguished Professor of the Year Award (1994), and inducted into the USU Alumni Hall of Honor (2006). Along with his teaching, he was advisor for USU Rodeo for over 25 years where he was known to many as “Doc”. He also served as National College Rodeo Advisor.

Darwin was a faithrful member of the LDS Church where he served in many different capacities including serving as a counselor in the Bishopric of the Logan 7th Ward. He had a testimony of the gospel and his Saviour which was most evident in the way he served his family and friends.

Darwin was preceded in death by his parents, and two infants brothers and his daughter in law, Paula Reese Nielsen. He is survived by his wife, Zoe, his four sons Layne, Logan UT, Scott (Cindy), Hyrum, UT, Kent (Lori) Providence, UT and Jim (Audra) Greenough, MT, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Clyde (Carole) and Terry (Kimberly) of Hyrum, UT and his sister Valerie Chambers, Logan, UT; his sister in law, Frances Lee Gooley and his brothers in law Rulon Boyd Maughan and Peter Kent Maughan.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, March 3, 2011 in the Logan 7th Ward Chapel (Mt. Logan Stake Center), 565 East 100 South in Logan. A viewing will be held on Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan, and prior to services at the church on Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net .
