David Eugene Benton, 95, longtime resident of Idaho Falls, Idaho, passed away peacefully at the George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home on Dec. 12th, 2016. He lived an amazing life and passed on a wonderful legacy to his descendants.
David was born June 29, 1921 in Payette, Idaho, the oldest of seven children of Velma Jones and Rufus Benton. Growing up, David’s family moved all over Utah and Idaho following his father, who worked as a railroad telegrapher and station agent, and lived in numerous towns including Kuna, Iona, Sandy, Salt Lake City, and Trenton. He graduated from North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah in 1939. He graduated from Utah State Agriculture College in Logan, Utah in 1943 with a degree in Civil Engineering.
David served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married his sweetheart, Marvel Cooley, on February 2, 1944. They were sealed in the Hawaiian Temple June 22, 1946 while David was stationed in Hawaii. David and Marvel celebrated their 72th wedding anniversary this year.
David established Benton Engineering in Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1950. He served as the city engineer for the cities of Blackfoot, Shelley, Ammon, and Ucon, Idaho. He was a consulting engineer for the cities of St. Anthony, Ashton, and Rexburg, Idaho during his years in Idaho.
David was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He faithfully served in many church callings including 2nd counselor of the Sixteenth Ward, ward and stake clerk, first bishop of the Idaho Falls Twenty-Fourth Ward, member of the High Council, and many other callings.
David always thought of others first and often stepped in to help those around him whenever he could. He developed a love for photography from his father and could always be found with a camera in his hands. He loved his family, serving others, and especially loved children.
David is survived by his wife, Marvel Cooley Benton; six children, Dorothy (Ray) McCarty, Susan Farnsworth, and Barbara (Gregg) Baker of Idaho Falls; David (Kristy) Benton of Gilbert, Arizona; son-in law Renny (Cindy) Rogers of Mesa, Arizona; Mary (Brian) Judy of Preston, Idaho; and Mina (Carl) Robbins of Pleasant View, Utah; sister, Juanita (Phil) Bryson of Queen Creek, Arizona; 34 grandchildren; 70 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and in-laws.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Velma Jones and Rufus Benton; sister, Betty; brothers, Daniel, Lloyd, John Eldon, and Paul Benton; daughter, Ann Benton Rogers; and son-in-law, Roland Evans Farnsworth.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, located at 34 East Center St in Logan, Utah. Friends may visit one hour prior to services. Interment will be at the Newton Cemetery with military rites. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the LDS Missionary Fund.
