Dean Wagstaff Haslem

NORTH LOGAN - Dean W. Haslem, 91 passed peacefully away at his home on Monday June 26, 2006. Dean was born on March 15, 1915 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fourth child of John H. and Florence Wagstaff Haslem. He grew up in the Uintah basin. His mother passed away during the flu epidemic of 1918. He left the basin to pursue his education and then to serve his first LDS mission to the Tahitian Islands. His mission was interrupted by WWII and he completed his missionary labors in Texas. After his mission, Dean enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in the same area of Texas in which he had served his mission. There he met Evelyn Burnes and they were married on June 18, 1943 in the Salt Lake Temple. They just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Dean and Evelyn are the parents of 6 children: Kay (Chad) Watt, Amelia Island, Florida; Bruce (Karen) Haslem, North Logan, Utah; Janis (Dan) Griffin, Bountiful, Utah; Debra (Ken) Lindsay, Manti, Utah; LaRae (Martin) Tadlock, Marina, California; Larry (Annette) Haslem, Petersboro, Utah. There are 27 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Dean's brothers and sisters include Kenneth and Dorothy Haslam (both deceased), Niles and Jenny Haslem (both deceased), Helen and Arvil (deceased) Wadley, Glen and Barta Haslam (both deceased), Acel and Oral Haslem, Rhea and Ed Lewis, Lynn and Joan (deceased) Haslem, Verl and Leah Haslem, Marie and Wendell (deceased) Russon, and Myron and Ruth Haslem.
After graduating from BYU in 1950, Dean and Evelyn moved to Cache Valley where Dean began his career as the manager of the USU Bookstore. He received his Master Degree from USU during this time. He retired from USU in 1981 after 31 years of service. He was known and loved by many who worked for him and with him at the Bookstore. Dean was elected the National College Bookstore manager of the Year. He was also selected by Time Magazine as the College Bookstore Manager of the year for 1976. He was President of the Western College Bookstore Association 1961-1962.
Dean was active in community affairs. He served on the Cache County School Board for 10 years and also served as a member on the State of Utah School Board. He was very active in PT A while his children were in school. He participated for many years as a North Logan Lion and helped with several building projects, including building some of the first sidewalks in North Logan.
As a life-long member of the Latter-Day Saint Church, Dean had the opportunity to serve in many meaningful ways. He especially enjoyed his service as the bishop of a USU single student ward. He served as a missionary again with his wife Evelyn as his companion. They served first in Connecticut and a second mission in Winnipeg, Canada. They served for 10 plus years as workers in the Logan Temple.
Dean and Evelyn enjoyed riding through the mountains and over the back roads. If there was a road they had not explored they took it. We think they thought the Buick, Park Avenue was a Jeep. They taught their children to enjoy traveling and they do.
Dean liked to fish, especially if his children and grandchildren were involved. He enjoyed gardening, again involving his children. Mostly he liked the great feeling of accomplishment that comes from working hard.
There will be a viewing at Allen-Cranney Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, June 30th. Funeral services for Dean will be July 1st
at the North Logan lOth Ward Chapel, 1550 East 1900 North, North Logan, Utah at 1 PM.
John Evans, Pioneer Valley Branch President, will conduct. Prior to the service, a
viewing from 11 AM to 12:30 PM will be held at the church. Interment in the Logan Cemetery
