Del Ray Campbell, 87, passed away November 29, 2019 while working with his cattle. Born January 3, 1932 to Joseph Milton and Vera Thorpe Campbell, Del Ray spent his life working with Hereford Cattle, for many years operating Campbell Brothers alongside his brothers, Clyde Joseph Campbell and Milton Thorpe Campbell.
Del Ray was an active member of the 4-H program throughout his life beginning in 1943 at the age of eleven. This began his interest and devotion to his lifelong work in the cattle industry. Of his experience Del Ray wrote: “I consider the experience and knowledge I’ve gained in the 4-H club work to be invaluable to me. It’s a marvelous opportunity for any young boys and girls to participate in this work under the guidance of such capable leaders.”
Before joining the Service, Del Ray was an all-star football player at Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. Del Ray was widely pursued by many professional football teams; however, he was forced to turn down the offers as he was drafted into the Army where he obtained the rank of First Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1962. For the majority of his service, he was stationed in Dachau, Germany.
Following his service, Del Ray began his teaching career at South Cache High School. Throughout his career he taught mathematics, health, and physical education, as well as coached football at South Cache, Sky View, and Mountain Crest.
In July 1973, Del Ray married Patricia Andreasen. They were married for 17 years. Following their separation, both Del Ray and Patricia remained devoted to maintaining a positive environment for their children and grandchildren, reuniting frequently for family activities and celebrations.
Del Ray was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was very devoted to missionary work. While unable to serve a mission himself, he took every opportunity to aid missionaries with their mission expenses. He also faithfully served in the Logan, Utah Temple for many years where he enjoyed the opportunities of seeing many of his former students again.
Del Ray is survived by his children, Lynnette Gardner of Smithfield, Peter Archibald (Shannon Byrne) of Logan, Paul Campbell (LeAnn) of College Ward, and Josey Hilton (Grant) of Woods Cross. He is also survived by his sister Lenore Litz (Owen) of Providence, and his brother Milton T. Campbell (Sharon) of Providence. He has nine grandchildren: Rhiannon, Lochlain, McKenzie, Jamie, Aiden, McKenzie, Samantha (Tyler), Preston and Kelton, one great grandchild: PrimRose, 30 Herefords, and 1 Angus (Don’t ask…).
Del Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Milton and Vera Thorpe Campbell, his sister Ione Campbell, brother Clyde Joseph Campbell, sister-in-law Barbara Davis Campbell (Clyde), and brother-in-law Owen Elijah Litz.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that remembrances be directed to the Cache Junior Livestock Sale in the name of Del Ray Campbell for youth agricultural scholarships. They may be sent in care of: Lewiston State Bank, Attn: Brian Webster, 2190 North Main, P.O. Box 6097, North Logan, UT 84341.
