Delmar W. Iverson

September 9, 1921 — July 22, 2011

Millville, UT – Delmar Wayne Iverson died on July 22, 2011, at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center. He was born on September 9, 1921, in Millville, Utah, the third child of August and Lula Anderson. He attended Millville Elementary and graduated from South Cache High School and LDS seminary. He attended USU where he studied business law and retail selling under the GI on-the-job training program.

Delmar enlisted in the United States Navy on August 24, 1942, during World War II and received his boot camp training in San Diego, California. He was chosen to attend an advanced training program under the Naval Armed Guard located on Treasure Island, which also became his home base during the war. His specific purpose during his service was to give protection to ships transporting munitions and war supplies to war zones. During his service, he traveled to numerous nations and sailed around the world two times, usually leaving from the west coast and returning at New York. He would say that the “lady with the torch” was always a great sight to see after months on the high seas. One arrival at New York was a sad one when he learned his mother had passed away almost three months prior. A highlight of his service was a time he was docked on the Red Sea and he and a few sailors went to Cairo, Egypt and rode camels to the famous pyramids and the
Sphinx. At the time of his honorable discharge, he had earned Asiatic, Pacific, American, European, African, and Middle East campaign ribbons.

Delmar married LaVerne Stoddard on August 4, 1944, in the Logan LDS temple while he was on a two-week furlough. They were engaged when he was on a furlough one year prior. Their courtship consisted mainly of love letters written while Delmar was on the high seas. They were blessed with three children: Dixie, Wayne, and Alan.

After his discharge from the Navy on October 14, 1945, Delmar worked for the UIC railroad until it ceased operations. He was a store manager at Leon Stucki Building Specialties Company for 15 years. He later worked at Hill AFB where he retired after 22 years of service. He served 12 years on the Millville-Nibley cemetery board. He was a member of the American Legion, Ballard/Grant Post 101. He was an active member of the LDS church where he served in many callings including elders quorum president, bishopric counselor, and six-and-a-half years as bishop. He also served over eight years on the high council and as high priest group leader. He and his wife enjoyed their callings as stake missionaries. He has done extensive family history and genealogy work and loved temple work. He also liked being a home teacher.

Delmar enjoyed traveling, hiking, and fishing with his family. He loved the beautiful scenery of the parks in Southern Utah and Yellowstone. He and his wife always had beautiful flower gardens and a large vegetable garden and would share the produce from their garden with family, friends, and neighbors. He liked yard work and felt proud when their yard was well trimmed. He always had a bird feeder which he kept full of bird seed to make sure the birds had plenty to eat. He enjoyed watching the Lawrence Welk show and for over 40 years rarely missed an episode. He was an ardent fan of the Utah Jazz, the Aggies, and the BYU Cougars.

After 55 years of marriage, LaVerne passed away on September 13, 1999. Together, they loved to travel and liked to visit all the different towns in Cache Valley. They were especially fond of traveling through Logan Canyon and on to Bear Lake where they would stop and rest at his son Alan’s cabin located on a hill overlooking the beautiful lake. After LaVerne’s passing, Delmar married Radah Anderson Barker on September 2, 2000. She passed away March 17, 2011.

Delmar is survived by his daughter Dixie Lou (Clinton) Howell, Millville, daughter-in-law Lori Iverson, Millville, son Alan Kae (Denise) Iverson, North Logan, sister Elda Vernice (Delton, deceased) Morgan, Ogden. Delmar has 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Delmar was preceded in death by his parents, wife LaVerne, brother Clarence Leon Iverson, and son Wayne Leon Iverson.
