Delwyn A Newbrand, 90, of Avon , Utah , died Tuesday, October 9, 2007 , at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden , surrounded by his loving family.
One of 6 children, Del was born in Daniels , Idaho on September 17, 1917 to Joseph J. Newbrand and Ida Ruegesser. His brothers and sisters included Lester, Ruby, Alice , Delores, Emma Lyle, and Rhea, who died as a baby. He was a custom farmer with his father, and older brother, Lester. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943, where he served until honorably discharged.
Delwyn met Marie Hooker in a train station in St Louis , Missouri during World War II. They married on December 7, 1943 , in Chaffee, Missouri , and they moved to Utah and were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple in 1953. After Marie’s mother passed away in 1949, they opened their hearts and home to her three younger siblings, Ralph, Ronald D, and Karen L Hooker.
Del was skilled at a wide variety of occupations. He was on the maintenance crew at Thiokol, he worked in general construction and carpentry, he earned his REA electrician certificate in Missouri, he was employed by White’s Trout Farm of Paradise, he helped custom-build many local dairy setups, and he, along with his wife Marie, drove bus from 1974 to 1980 for Benson Workshop for the handicapped and the Exceptional Child Care Center. He also always had the gift of being able to divine water, and found uncounted water wells for many people without ever finding a dry one.
Del was an active member of the LDS Church , serving as a home teacher, activities committee chairman, teacher in the priesthood quorums, and was a member of the Paradise 1st Ward Choir for 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marie of Avon; two daughters, Sherida Newbrand of Avon , and Shawna (David) Eggli of Tremonton. Ever willing to welcome others into their family circle, they later included among their children, Robert (Tina) Bates; Keith (Jeanne) Davis ; and Mindy (David) Miller along with 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, one brother, 5 brothers-in-law, and one grandson.
Funeral services will be conducted by Bishop James Clawson, at 12:00 noon , Saturday, Oct 13, 2007 , at the Paradise 1st Ward (new building). A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm Friday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan, and also prior to services from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at the church. Interment will be in the Paradise Cemetery . Condolences may be shared with the family at www.allenmortuaries.net .
