PROVIDENCE – Dennis M. Carlsen, 88 passed away peacefully May 1, 2017 and joined his loving wife Edith. Dennis was born at home on the Crystal Springs Ranch in Sharon, ID on Christmas day, 1928. Dennis was the second of five children born to Maud Matthews and Christian Carlsen.
Dennis grew up ranching and farming with his family during the great depression. These tough economic times taught Dennis self-reliance, the art of trading goods and services, and most of all, a work ethic and honesty that would define his character throughout his life.
Dennis attended a one room school house in Sharon, ID where he and his sister would ride their horses “old Dobbs” and “Queen” back and forth to school. Dennis graduated from Fielding High School in Paris, ID in 1947. Dennis worked on the ranch until he was called to the Denmark, Copenhagen mission in June 1950. While serving in the Silkeborg area, Dennis vaguely remembers meeting a young blond women named Edith who years later would become his wife.
During a Danish mission reunion in Salt Lake City, Dennis and Edith met again, where Dennis convinced Edith to take the rest of her two week vacation and spend it with him at the Ranch in Bear Lake. During the end of this visit, Dennis received his draft notice to appear for boot camp in three days. Dennis and Edith became engaged, and during a time of leave, were married in the Logan LDS temple Feb 19, 1954. Dennis and Edith were devoted members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints throughout their lives.
Dennis and Edith made their home in Logan, UT while Dennis attended Utah State University. While attending USU, Dennis had the opportunity to purchase the Bernina sewing machine franchise, and together with Edith owned and operated the Bernina/Stylish Fabrics stores in Logan and throughout Salt Lake, the Rosella Manor reception center in Providence (Old Rock church) and the Scarlet Rose gift shop. In 1989, Dennis returned to ranching and farming full time with his sons until the time Edith and her declining health required his help.
Dennis and Edith raised six children in their Providence home: Loretta (Kim Frederick), Debbie Carlsen (deceased), Mike (Shelley) Carlsen, Lisa (Ivan Sharp), Brent (Monique) Carlsen, Kent (Maika) Carlsen.
