HYRUM, UTAH: Weldon Derle Nielsen, of Hryum Utah, passed away December 9, 2011 of natural causes at the age of 80.
He was born October 26, 1931 in Hyrum to Weldon and Eva (McBride) Nielsen. Dad married Wilma Wolsey on December 9th, 1955 in the Sale Lake Temple and he returned to her and our Heavenly Father on their 56th wedding anniversary. Mom passed away in 1983.
Dad was raised on a dairy farm and had his own herd prior to enlisting in the US Navy during the Korea War and served on a destroyer. After serving for 4 years in the Navy he attended Brigham Young University where he met and married mom. They returned to Hyrum to raise their family of four sons and one daughter.
Dad worked 2 jobs almost his whole life, with the farm and his position at Hyrum City Public Works Department and retired as the Public Works Director. He spent 41 years serving the people of that town and made great improvement to the drinking water and irrigation system. He was chosen Hyrum Distinguished Citizen in 2001.
Dad has a strong sense of community and appreciation of the quality of life for his family and those that he cared for. He was a special friend to many and a great example to all those he associated with. He led by example.
Dad was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He held many positions, including being a member of a Bishopric and Stake High Councilman. These positions helped him to grow spiritually and find a greater love for his family and friends. In his younger years serving in the scouts he was famous for breaking 2 eggs in each hand while preparing breakfast. Dad served in the Lions Club, and was President of the Hyrum Irrigation Company and South Cache Water Users for many years.
According to dad his most prized possession where his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent many hours of his life concerned for their welfare and happiness.
Dad is survived by his sons and daughter, Kelly (Layne) Nielsen of New Mexico, Tracy (Kathy) Nielsen, Corey (Kayla) Nielsen, Susan (Delon) Brower of Hyrum, and Kurt (Mary) Nielsen of California, his sisters, Coralie Maughan of Wellsville and LaRae Williamson of Idaho Falls. Dad had 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 12:00 pm in the Hyrum Stake Center , 600 South 200 East . There will be
a viewing on Tuesday evening at Allen-Hall Mortuary , 34 East Center, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and at the church on Wednesday from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery with Military Honors. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family online at
